Billy Joel’s brain disorder explained as singer reveals sudden diagnosis and cancels all upcoming conce

The ‘Piano Man’ singer announced that he has been diagnosed with the chronic condition

Billy Joel’s team announced to the world this week that he had tragically been diagnosed with a brain disorder that affects just 0.2 percent of people in their 70s.

The ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire’ hitmaker had 17 upcoming concerts spread across 2025 and 2026, but following his shock Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) diagnosis the 76-year-old has canceled all of them.

The rare condition is estimated to affect around 700,000 Americans, with the average age of developing onset NPH being 70 years old.

While it is prevalent in only 0.2 percent of adults in the US aged 70 to 80, the number rises to roughly one in 20 over the age of 80 years old – 5.9 percent to be specific, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

However, it is believed that many more cases are either misdiagnosed, or more likely, undiagnosed.

The health service states that some symptoms of NPH are trouble lifting your feet, taking shorter and unsteady steps, walking uncertainly – as if you’ve forgotten how to do so.

Other symptoms include mental and physical slowness, problems with memory, changes in emotional behavior, and urinary incontinence.

Explaining what it is, the Cleveland Clinic writes: “Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a brain condition that happens when fluid buildup inside or around your brain disrupts your brain function.

“That can affect several brain-related abilities, including thinking and concentrating, memory, movement and more. The symptoms of NPH look very much like those of dementia, but NPH is sometimes reversible.”

As for what causes NPH, there are two forms of it that happen at a similar rate.

The first is primary (idiopathic) NPH, which is medically dubbed ‘idiopathic’ – terminology used for conditions that happen for unknown reasons.

However, it is suspected that it is due to an age-related issue of how our bodies reabsorb cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

Although conditions like Alzheimer’s and dementia could also contribute to it.

The other form is secondary NPH, which is contributed by conditions such as a brain aneurysm, brain tumours, infections of the brain and a person having a stroke can also cause NPH.

Taking to Instagram on Friday (May 23) to share the devastating news, Joel’s team posted: “Billy Joel has announced that he will be cancelling all scheduled concerts following a recent diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH).

“This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance.

“Under his doctor’s instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period.

“Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health. He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage.”

With the singer adding himself: “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience and thank you for understanding.”

Singer Billy Joel has canceled all of his upcoming gigs after being diagnosed with a brain disorder most common in those aged 65+.

The 76-year-old has called off 17 dates across 2025 and 2026, including two dates in the UK after doctors told the artist he should stop live performances.

Known for known for classic hits such as ‘Piano Man’, ‘Uptown Girl’ and ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire’, fans will be disappointed by the news, but it is of course important Joel now receives the treatment he needs.

The New Yorker has been diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a condition that affects about 0.2 percent of people between the ages of 70 and 80, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Joel’s team issued a statement which detailed his diagnosis on Instagram on Friday (May 23).

Symptoms of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH)

Cleveland Clinic states trouble lifting your feet, steps being shorter and unsteady, plus freezing or walking uncertainly are all symptoms of NPH.

Other symptoms include mental and physical slowness, problems with memory, changes in emotional behavior, and even erectile dysfunction.

What causes NPH?

There may actually be a connection to brain conditions such as Alzheimer’s and dementia, Cleveland Clinic notes.

The health site states: “Researchers are continuing to explore exactly how and why NPH happens and whether or not other conditions can contribute to it. Answers to those questions could eventually help prevent or better treat this condition.”

Conditions such as a brain aneurysm, brain tumours, infections of the brain and a person having a stroke can also cause NPH.

Thankfully, NPH is extremely treatable, including surgery that sees a device called a shunt to minimise the symptoms.

Treating NPH rarely involves any form of medications.

At the medical facility, he revealed that he had a ‘basal cell carcinoma’ – which he was getting removed.

“So today I am getting a basal cell carcinoma removed from my head.” Jonas says in the video.

“Yes, that is a actual little skin cancer guy that started to grow, and now I have to get surgery to remove it.”

In the clip, he can be seen listing the gauze off his forehead but blocked the stitches out with a strategically placed emoji.

He said: “Alright, I’m all done. Now it’s time to heal, heading home.”

According to Mayo Clinic, basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer which ‘begins in the basal cells’.

This is ‘a type of cell within the skin that produces new skin cells as old ones die off’.

The website also states that it ‘often appears as a slightly transparent bump on the skin, though it can take other forms.

This type of skin cancer is ‘thought to be caused by long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight’ and it’s recommended to avoid the sun and use sunscreen to protect against it.

However, other risk factors can increase your chances, such as family history, previous diagnosis’s or having too many freckles or moles.

Jonas wrote in the video’s description: “Friendly reminder to get your moles checked.”

Underneath his video, fans were quick to wish him a ‘speedy recovery’ and even The Skin Cancer Foundation expressed their gratitude towards him for raising awareness.

They wrote: “So sorry to hear about your BCC, Kevin. Thank you for raising awareness. Early detection is key. Wishing you the best on your recovery journey.”

Someone else said they were ‘so glad you were able to catch it so soon’, while another thanked the singer for’ being real and honest about your situation’.

“Skin cancer is always looked at from a ‘cut it off and done’ kinda cancer.” they added.

“You sharing opens doors for others to realize how important it is to check your skin! Hope surgery went well and keep sharing your experiences, it truly matters.”

Michael Bolton’s daughter reveals the ‘super weird’ symptom he experienced that led to brain cancer diagnosis

Michael Bolton’s daughter has revealed the ‘super weird’ symptom her father experienced that ultimately led to a cancer diagnosis.

At the beginning of 2024, Bolton confirmed to fans he had a brain tumor and underwent ‘immediate surgery’ at the back end of 2023.

The singer added: “Thanks to my incredible medical team, the surgery was a success. I am now recuperating at home and surrounded by the tremendous love and support of my family.

“For the next couple of months, I will be devoting my time and energy to my recovery which means I’ll have to take a temporary break from touring.”

A ‘super weird’ symptom saw Bolton go to the doctors and get checked out, and once in the hands of medical professionals, he was diagnosed with glioblastoma – a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer.

Bolton was out bowling with his kids and grandkids when everyone seemed to notice the 72-year-old was bowling out of turn.

“That was when we were like, ‘Something’s wrong with his brain,” Bolton’s daughter Taryn told People.

“Everything that happened was weird for him but not super alarming. When you look back at everything together … We missed so many things.”

Because of his incredibly busy career at the time, many put it down to less concerning symptoms.

Taryn added: “Is this stress? Is this sleep? He’d been working nonstop that whole time. Traveling, doing shows, doing all of these things. We were like, he’s getting older, he’s tired, he’s stressed out. All of these things we sort of explained in a way, one by one.”

There were many red flags on that evening, including an incident that saw Bolton fall out of his chair – something Taryn described as ‘very unusual’ for her father to do.

Neuro-oncologist Dr. Ingo Mellinghoff has been looking after Bolton, and he told People that symptoms of brain tumors include severe headaches, seizures and muscle weakness.

“If all of a sudden you’re a completely different person, and people are like, ‘He never gets out of bed anymore. What’s going on? He doesn’t want to do anything,'” he told the outlet.

“If somebody can’t move one part of their body, that’s never normal. Or changes in sensation. When they say, ‘I can’t feel anything anymore on my right side.’”

Bolton undergoes MRI scans every two months to ensure the cancer hasn’t returned, as glioblastoma has an ‘extremely high’ recurrence rate.

The songwriter’s last scan in April came back all clear.

Man who battled four brain tumors reveals bizarre symptom he experienced before diagnosis

The dad-of-one noticed one particularly strange occurence before he received his devastating diagnosis

Jenny Medlicott

A dad who has had to fend off four brain tumors over the last 14 years has revealed the bizarre symptom he experienced before his diagnosis.

Dan Horrocks, 33, was first diagnosed with a brain tumor back in August 2011 after receiving a free eye test at an opticians.

The optician noticed swelling on Dan’s optic nerves during the eye scan, and just one day later he was having brain surgery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in Birmingham, UK and a round of radiotherapy.

But just when Dan thought the nightmare was over, three years later in 2014 he was diagnosed with another brain tumor, then a third in 2018, and finally another in October last year.

Following his latest round of treatment, Dan has revealed an unusual symptom he experienced before one of his diagnoses – and it’s bizarre.

Ahead of his third diagnosis, Dan said he started craving olives – despite having never liked them before. And not only that, but he also started craving spinach and tomatoes for breakfast too.

The third tumor was picked up in a routine scan, but Dan and his wife, Sonia Khan, noticed the unusual symptom beforehand.

All of Dan’s tumors have been ependymomas – rare tumors which usually affect children around age five or adults around age 45.

He had brain surgery in November and spinal surgery in December for his latest diagnosis, but the tumors are in cells which line the paths where cerebral spinal fluid moves through the spine, and the cancer could come back anywhere in his spine or brain.

Doctors have said that Dan has had the maximum radiotherapy they can safely give him on the NHS, and chemotherapy is only likely to be 14 percent successful in treating his tumors.

Now on his ‘last roll of the dice’, Dan is raising money to go to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, to explore new treatments including genetic testing to find a personalized remedy.

He and his wife have raised over $60k (£50k) so far – exceeding their fundraising goal by over $10k.

The money will be spent on travel and consultations – including genetic tests on Mr Horrocks and his tumor samples – to see if a personalized treatment can be found.

Dan was diagnosed with his first of four brain tumors after suffering excruciating headaches, sickness, and dizziness. He had to learn to walk, talk and ‘think’ again after his first surgery.

Following the influx of donations for his fundraising mission, Mr Horrocks said he was ‘bowled over’ by the generosity he’s received.

He said: “I’m so shocked and overwhelmed with how quickly the money has come in. This could be the first step towards an innovative new treatment we can bring to the UK.

“The NHS staff have all been amazing – they said they can do surgeries but not much else more. That felt a bit like the end of a road and I’ve always tried to avoid that.”

If you’d like to donate to Dan’s GoFundMe, you can do so here.
