Man was awarded $21,500,000 after being hit by a sliding door

A 56-year-old man was awarded a whopping sum of money after being hit by a sliding door four years prior on a cruise ship.

Jim Hausman was willing to take legal action against Holland American cruise company after an incident that happened on board back in 2011.

A video was able to catch the moment that Jim walked through a hallway when an automatic sliding door closed on him, hitting him hard in the side of the head.

While the hit looked harmless enough, Jim and his wife Carol revealed it was actually the beginning of a series of health issues.

After the incident on the cruise ship the pair continued to enjoy the cruise as normal hoping a few days of relaxation would be exactly what the doctor ordered.

However, even after the cruise ended the issues persisted… in fact, they got worse.

Speaking to Inside Edition back in 2015, Carol said: “The doctor originally thought it was a bump on the head, there was a laceration and that he would recover.

“He is not logical anymore, irritability, mood swings and eventually he developed having seizures as well.”

Following the lawsuit a federal jury initially awarded Hausman $21.5 million in Washington state.

However, in early 2016, Judge Barbara Rothstein tossed the verdict for Hausman and ordered a new trial.

The cause was that Hausman’s former personal assistant, Amy Mizeur, contacted Holland America to let them know he had deleted emails that could have hurt his case.

She said she had seen Hausman spend several days deleting emails that he should have turned over to Holland America’s lawyers before the jury trial and during discovery.

It was also claimed that Hausman chose not to disclose the existence of one of his email accounts.

At the time, the judge said: “As a witness, [Hausman] came across evasive and untrustworthy.

“He appeared to weigh each answer, not for its truthfulness, but to assess whether it would damage his case. Mr. Hausman also seemed to capitalize on his alleged brain injury when it was convenient for him.

“He was confused or claimed memory loss when confronted with a question or exhibit that appeared to undermine his claims, yet was animated and full of information when his testimony supported his case.”

It is not clear if a retrial date has already taken place.

Clarence Moses-el was given a 48 year sentence in 1987 based on a woman’s dream but was given $2 million in compensation after he was proven innocent.

According to the woman, she was allegedly brutally assaulted and beaten in her apartment the night following a party, and later identified Moses-el after believing she’d seen him ‘in a dream.’

The attack reportedly took place in the dark in an assault so vicious that it left her with fractured facial bones and the loss of vision in one eye.

The victim identified three men she had been drinking with earlier and told police that they could potentially be guilty of the attack.

A day later, she said that she had a dream about the night of the attack, in which a man that she knew who went by the nickname ‘Bubbles’ had allegedly attacked her.

After this information was given, Moses-el was soon arrested and was later sentenced in court to 48 years in prison.

However, Moses-el never stopped fighting against the sentence and insisting his innocence, and later made a claim of ‘ineffective assistance of counsel ‘against his public defender for failing to obtain DNA testing prior to trial’ – with Colorado Courts denying that claim.

A few weeks later, Denver police department threw away physical evidence – including an untested rape kit – into the dumpster, despite it being labelled ‘Do not destroy’.

An investigation conducted into the matter cleared the police of any bad intentions and the department later told the Denver Post that ‘communication problems’ had led to the disposal.

But an investigation into an unrelated rape case set a second trial into motion, where his attorney said that a blood sample collected from the crime scene didn’t match Moses-el’s.

After his retrial in November 2016 and admission from another man to the assault, Moses-el was acquitted of all charges and was finally released after spending 25 years behind bars.

“This moment is a moment I’ve fought for for a long time,” he told The Denver Post. “I just want to get home to my family, my grandchildren. It’s wonderful, I waited a long time for this.”

However, he had one more fight on his hands..

Moses-el fought for compensation for his wrongful imprisonment.

Hart Van Denburg/CPR News

A law past in Colorado in 2013 stated that individuals who’ve been wrongly committed of a crime should be due compensation, but at the time Moses-el applied for compensation, the rape allegations he’d not long been acquitted of were being ‘re-pitched’.

But despite that, he continued to push, and in 2016, after almost 30 years, Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser said he would ‘not oppose a man’s petition for exoneration after he served nearly 30 years in prison for a crime the man says he did not commit’ – and accepted his right to compensation.

Moses-el said at the time:”You could surprise and shock and a host of things, because I woke up this morning with phone calls of good news, so I’ve been in a very pleasant, relaxed state.”

After three decades of fighting, he was acquitted of all charges and had been handed $2,304,979 for his wrongful imprisonment.

“That’s another reason why I’m happy, because it allows me to regain a lot of things that meant so much to me, so dear to me, that now having possession of these things again, it makes me feel like a full person,” he said.

Shocking footage shows moment Baltimore bridge falls apart after being hit by ship

Shocking footage shows moment Baltimore bridge falls apart after being hit by ship

The fire department has described the scene as a ‘mass casualty event’

Several people and vehicles are reported to have fallen into the Patapsco River in Baltimore, Maryland, after a bridge was hit by a container ship.

Emergency services were called at around 1.30am local time in the Francis Scott Key Bridge area, the Baltimore City Fire Department has confirmed.

Director of Communications Chief Kevin Cartright said the bridge had been struck by ‘a large vessel’ which caused it to collapse into the river.

Footage has already begun circulating on social media, showing the moment the vessel hit the bridge.

The fire department are now leading a multi-agency rescue operation, along with the US coastguard and other Maryland agencies.

Several people and vehicles were initially thought to have fallen into the water, however authorities have since said there is a possibility that as many as 20 workers could be in the river following the incident.

Although the number of casualties are yet to be confirmed, the fire department has since described the scene as a ‘mass casualty event’.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon M Scott has confirmed he’s aware of the incident and is on his way to the scene.

As per BBC News, he said: “I’m aware of and en route to the incident at the Key Bridge… Emergency personnel are on scene, and efforts are underway.”

The Francis Scott Key Bridge, which is known locally as the Key Bridge, is part of the I-95 interstate, running from Miami, Florida to Maine. All traffic is now being diverted through the city or harbor tunnel.

Taking to social media, Baltimore County executive Johnny Olszewski Jr confirmed rescue efforts are under way, while asking his followers to ‘pray for those impacted’.

He wrote: “I am aware of the situation at the Key Bridge and remain in regular communication with my Fire Chief and Director of Emergency Operations.

“Rescue efforts are underway. Please pray for those impacted.”

According to ship tracking data, the vessel that collided with the bridge was the Singapore-flagged Dali container ship, which is 300 meters long and was on its way to Colombo in Sri Lanka.

The Dali is said to have departed from the terminal at Port Breeze at around 12.45am local time, before heading towards the Francis Scott Key Bridge, where it became stationary around 45 minutes later.

Police helicopters have been circulating the area of the incident ever since, according to air traffic radars.

LADbible Group has contacted the Baltimore City Fire Department and US Coast Guard for further updates.

Singer Taylor Momsen must undergo rabies shots after being bitten by a bat onstage

Singer Taylor Momsen has to undergo a series of rabies shots after a bat flew onstage during a show and bit her.

Yes, you read that right.

As a musician, there are many things which can go wrong while you’re performing on stage.

Maybe you drop your mic, or a part of your instrument falls off and you have to repair it or adapt on the fly.

It could be that someone from the audience throws something, or even gets on stage.

But for Taylor Momsen, it was something else entirely which was invading the stage when a bat flew onto her while she was performing in Seville, Spain.

If that wouldn’t be enough to send most people into a panic, the flying mammal did also bite the singer while she was performing.

As a result, she now has to undergo a series of rabies shots following the escapade.

But despite all that, she managed to keep performing. The show must go on!

In fact, the singer seemed wholly unbothered by the encounter in a post to Instagram, describing the bat as ‘cute’ despite it biting her.

Posting about the incident to her social media page, she describing how the crowd had been left ‘screaming’ when the bat landed on her.

She wrote: “So…ROCK AND ROLL MOMENT…in Sevilla Wednesday during “Witches Burn” of all songs… a BAT flew onto me and clung to my leg…in the moment I was performing and had no idea until the incredible crowd kept screaming and pointing…”

There’s being into the music and there’s not knowing you have a bat on your leg.

She continued: “He was cute, but yes he bit me…so rabies shots for the next two weeks thanks to all the staff at the hospital who dubbed me #batgirl after seeing it on the local news that morning…more footage to come…that’s one for the books!!!!”

Many people flocked into the comments to share their thoughts on the bizarre moment, with one writing: “You handled that like a pro! Damn! What a memory for you,” while another wrote: “I would have freaked out you handled that so well.”

Another pointed out this wasn’t the first time a bat has featured in a rock concert, commenting: “Ozzy’s proud.”

This references an infamous moment where Ozzy Osbourne accidentally bit the head off a living bat.

Part of Osbourne’s onstage ritual had been to throw raw meat at the audience, who would throw back whatever crazy things they could sneak in.

This included sheep testicles, live snakes and frogs, dead rats, and of course the live bat.

Mistaking it for a rubber bat, Osbourne bit its head off in front of the horrified crowd.

He later recalled: “I’ll tell you what guys, it ain’t fun when you get them rabies shots.”

Hit-and-run suspect captured by police after making mistake with missing AirPod

Hit-and-run suspect captured by police after making mistake with missing AirPod

Police caught the suspect thanks to an AirPod

A suspect in a hit-and-run was caught by police after an AirPod belonging to the victim got tracked to their address.

Earlier this year, a 15-year-old Florida teen was out riding his bike when he was struck by a vehicle.

Lachlan Nichol had been on his bike in Jensen Beach when the car struck him, sending the teen tumbling into the passenger window and severely injuring him.

The driver then sped off from the scene before Lachlan could spot the car’s license plate, resulting in a hit-and-run which would have been tough to track down.

However, the 15-year-old later realised that one of his AirPods was missing and not at the scene, leading police to figure out where the suspect had gone.

Lachlan had suffered a broken nose, cheekbone and eye socket in the crash, but the loss of one of his AirPods helped point police in the right direction.

It turned out that one of the little earphones had gone into the suspect’s car, and when the 15-year-old went back to the scene of the hit-and-run to retrieve his AirPods only one was discovered.

Thanks to tracking technology police were able to find an address where they discovered a damaged vehicle, with Lachlan’s AirPod wedged beneath a mat in the floor of the car.

Police spoke to the property’s owner, 49-year-old Peter Swing, and charged him with leaving the scene of a crash and causing great bodily injury.

As per NBC Miami, Swing told officers he had been involved in the crash and drove away because he panicked due to previously spending time in prison on drug charges.

The 49-year-old ended up being arrested, with Martin County Sheriff William Snyder saying in a statement at the time: “I think the family will undoubtedly feel some measure of justice, but we can’t undo what happened and I think the real sting here is that he left an unconscious child in a dark parking lot and drove away.”

After recovering in hospital and returning home, Lachlan and his family said ‘thanks Apple’ in an appearance on Inside Edition.

It’s not the only time modern technology has played a part in car crashes.

Eagle-eyed folks on the internet who were trawling through Google Street View appeared to spot the moment when a man on a motorbike appears to be struck by the Street View car itself, leaving people to wonder how it ended up being uploaded onto the platform for all to see.
