Emma Stone had the perfect response to reporter who used her real name as they reunite at Cannes

Many fans were unaware that Emma is not the actress’ real name

The reporter’s interview with the two-time Oscar winner went viral last year, and he says it ‘skyrocketed’ his career ‘literally for saying one word’.

Their reunion came as Stone was promoting her new film Eddington at the Cannes film festival – the fourth feature film by Midsommar director Ari Aster.

Aster’s debut film Hereditary was so disturbing it did emotional ‘damage’ to one of the actors Alex Wolff, so film fans are intrigued to see what he has in store for them next. Stone stars alongside Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal and Austin Butler, with the movie telling the story of a standoff between a sheriff and a mayor during the Covid-19 pandemic in Eddington, New Mexico.

And while Stone’s name will appear as Emma in the credits of that movie, that’s not actually what she likes to be called.

Last year, a clip went viral online when a reporter from Kazakhstan referred to Emma by her real name.

At the time, Emma was promoting her movie Kinds of Kindness when the reporter called her Emily.

“My name is Emily, thank you, very nice,” said Emma at the time, after the reporter was ‘corrected’.

Yep, to the world, she’s known as Emma, but her birth name is actually Emily Jean Stone.

At the beginning of her acting career, Emma changed her name when she discovered there was already an actress with the name ‘Emily Stone’.

When the reporter was reunited with Stone, he said: “Before asking a question, I’d like to thank you for quite literally changing my life.

“Just a year ago, we were in the press room and I addressed you by your real name, Emily.”

Emma responded: “Yes! It’s very good to see you.”

“Your kind and warm response, it went viral in Western media and obviously in my country, Kazakhstan, and it has skyrocketed my career immediately. It has changed my personal life immediately, literally for saying one word,” the reporter continued.

“And now I can be once again here in much better conditions… again talking to you, this is a great pleasure, and just for you to know, I’m eternally grateful.”

Emma, taken aback by the reporter’s comments, said: “That was incredibly sweet, and I’m so happy that a name could do that.”

Following the viral clip last year, Emma was asked which name she preferred during an interview on the Today show, and revealed her name change was partly inspired by a hit girl group.

“I’m fine either way. I really am. My real name is Emily, though,” she said.

“[Emily Stone] was taken at Screen Actors Guild. It’s sort of like when you register a business and you can’t have the same name as someone else. I’ve been saying Emily my whole life. You can call me whatever you want. You can make up a name.”

She also revealed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that the name ‘Emma’ was inspired by the British girl band the Spice Girls.

“Growing up, I was super blonde, and my real name is Emily, but I wanted to be called Emma because of Baby Spice. And guess what, now I am,” she said.

“It wasn’t necessarily because of her. But yes, in second grade, did I go up to the teacher on the first day and ask her to call me Emma? Yes, I did. And was it because of Emma Lee Bunton from the Spice Girls? Yes, it was.”

Like many celebrities, Emma Stone goes by a different name to her birth-given one

Emma Stone no longer wants to go by Emma Stone.

No, the Kinds of Kindness star doesn’t want to now go by something outlandish like Regina Phalange or Holden McGroin, but her birth-given name instead.

Dozens of celebrities in Hollywood have stage names – some being more obvious than some. For example, Vin Diesel isn’t the Fast and Furious star’s real name. He’s actually called Mark Sinclair.

Elsewhere, Jamie Foxx’s real name is Eric Marlon Bishop.

Some famous faces might opt for what they deem as a more interesting or memorable name, but Stone had to change her name for a different reason.

When you become a professional actor, you have to join SAG-AFTRA for a variety of reasons and, if someone already has your registered name, then you simply have to pick another one to go by.

Chatting to The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year alongside her The Curse co-star Nathan Fielder, Fielder said: “Before we continue, I’d like to say something.

“Her name’s Emily, but she goes by Emma professionally.

“So when there’s people that don’t know her, I end up saying Emma. But I’m going to just say Emily from here on.”

The actor was then asked if anyone in Hollywood refers to her by Emily, to which she replied: “When I get to know them, people that I work with do. It’s just because my name was taken [by another actress in SAG].

“Then I freaked out a couple of years ago. For some reason, I was like, ‘I can’t do it anymore. Just call me Emily.’ Nathan calls me Em, which is easier.”

When asked if she would be bothered if a fan in the street called her by her birth name, she added that it would be ‘so nice’ to go by Emily.

“No. That would be so nice. I would like to be Emily.” Stone said.

As to where the name ‘Emma’ came from, she drew inspiration from 90s pop group, The Spice Girls.

When she was a guest on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon back in 2018, Stone shared: “Growing up, I was super blonde, and my real name is Emily, but I wanted to be called Emma because of Baby Spice and guess what? Now I am.”

She went on to note that she didn’t pick the name solely because of Bunton, but did admit she started referring to herself as ‘Emma’ in second grade because she was such a Spice Girls fan.

“It wasn’t necessarily because of [Bunton] but yes, in second grade, did I go up to the teacher on the first day and ask her to call me Emma? Yes I did,” she said.

And the rest was history.

Emma Stone has explained exactly how it feels to be globally referred to by a name that isn’t hers.

Two-time Academy Award winner Stone, 35, has been an active industry actor since 2004 but didn’t actually make her feature film debut until 2007’s Superbad.

The coming-of-age comedy, starring Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, earned the Arizona native a Young Hollywood Award and helped propel her to bag seminal roles in Easy A and Crazy Stupid, Love.

Since then, Stone has portrayed Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man and received two prestigious Oscars for her work on La La Land and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things.

Moreover, the mother-of-one is a Broadway star and she and her husband Dave McCary’s production company, Fruit Tree, have produced movies such as Problemista and I Saw the TV Glow.

But before the fame and fortune, Stone was forced to change her name.

Earlier this year, the Zombieland alum explained before she became famous there had been another actor in the Screen Actors Guild called Emily Stone.

Therefore, she elected to be professionally known as Emma Stone.

When asked how she would react if fans began calling her Emily, she said: “That would be so nice. I would like to be Emily.”

In a new interview with TODAY’s Craig Melvin, 45, Stone claimed she was ‘fine either way’ with people calling her by her birth or stage name.

Appearing on the show with her Kinds of Kindness co-star Jesse Plemons, Stone was asked: “Are we still going by Emma, or Emily? There’s been some confusion over your name.”

“I’m fine either way,” she responded. “I really am. My real name is Emily, though.”

When questioned why she’d facilitated people calling her Emma, the star replied: “It was taken at Screen Actors Guild. It’s sort of like when you register a business and you can’t have the same name as someone else.”

“I’ve been saying Emily my whole life … you can call me whatever you want,” she added. “You can make up a name!”

Elsewhere during the interview, Stone opened up about a scene from the Kinds of Kindness trailer where one of her characters breaks out in dance.

“It just came from my heart and soul,” she laughed. “During Poor Things, I would kind of dance in between takes and things.

“This one was something that Yorgos saw me do, and he was like, ‘We should just recreate this for Kinds of Kindness. So just make it up as you go.'”

The forthcoming anthology movie marks Stone’s third feature film collaboration with the 50-year-old Grecian director.

Kinds of Kindness is set to have a limited theatrical release in the US from June 21.

A seemingly tense stand off between Emma Stone and Margaret Qualley left fans with a slew of questions after the two ran into one another at the Oscars.

Even if you aren’t the biggest fan of the Oscars, a lot of people are still curious about the hoard of celebrities mingling with one another.

Normally, it makes for a lot of cute moments and reunions between friends, but one interaction seemed to shock people.

Actresses Emma Stone and Margaret Qualley appeared to get into it in a brief interaction that went viral on social media after the March 3 ceremony.

The clip is shot from behind Stone’s back, but Qualley’s expressions are clear and show her looking rather serious as she approaches Stone in a confrontational manner.

Stone is seen taking a few steps back, as Qualley and her husband Jack Antonoff step through.

TikTok users were quick to demand answers, questioning whether there was tension between the actresses.

One user asked: “Can someone get a lip reader in here? Who’s a lip reader because I really wanna know what she said.”

Another added: “Where is the lip reader girl??? I want the tea too!!!”

A third commented: “What ever that was, out of line , Emma body language says that she’s being confronted aggressively. Shameful.”

A lip reader has finally weighed in one what was likely said and further explained the dynamic between the two celebs.

Lip reader Nicola Hickling spoke to the Daily Mail and said: “It looks like Margaret is about to square up in this scene, giving Emma her mean girl look.

“Don’t worry, they are not fighting though. They do this all the time.

“In fact, Margaret says to Emma, ‘Yeah and I am about to freak out.’”

Other fans who were in the know also took to social media to calm down those fretting over the relationship between the two actresses.

One person commented: “Just so you all know, they do this at almost every awards show they go to. It’s their inside joke. Do some research before commenting on what you do not know people.”

And another added: “Theres a whole other video of them at an event doing the same thing but in that video it’s obvious they’re joking.”

As well as this, last May at Cannes 2024 red carpet, fans may remember similar scenes where the two were seen getting in one another’s faces playfully arguing before laughing and breaking character.

Emma Stone would like to go by her real name.

The star has been in a host of movies over the years, including comedies like Easy A and The House Bunny, to her Oscar Award winning performances in Poor Things and La La Land.

Basically, Stone has become a household name in Hollywood over the course of her career – but she would now like to change things up.

Like many celebrities, Stone has a kind-of stage name that she goes by in the industry – and it’s not that different from her real name, however.

Stone’s real surname is actually Stone; it’s just her first name that’s different.

And after decades as an actress, the Zombieland star admitted that it would be ‘so nice’ to go by her real name.

Stone was recently interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter alongside fellow actor Nathan Fielder, who is her co-star on the comedy drama, The Curse.

Speaking to the magazine, Fielder said: “Before we continue, I’d like to say something. Her name’s Emily, but she goes by Emma professionally. So when there’s people that don’t know her, I end up saying Emma. But I’m going to just say Emily from here on.”

I’m sure she wasn’t the first young girl to demand to be called the same name as one of The Spice Girls.
