Local authorities have concluded that an incident that saw two students shot was likely a murder-suicide at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
A spokesperson for the university confirmed to the media that two students were discovered with gunshot wounds at the student residency Wilgus Hall.
They were identified as Hallie Helms and Kelsie Martin, both aged 22.
Authorities are still trying to work out the timeline of events, but they have stated they believe it occurred on Monday, May 19 at approximately 4 p.m. local time.
Helms was an elementary education major and was pronounced dead at the scene while Martin, a psychology major and assistant resident director, was transported to Southwest Health and then flown to UW hospital, where she later died.

Preliminary autopsy found that Martin died from a gunshot wound, whereas Helms died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The university added: “All indications at this time from the preliminary autopsy suggest a murder-suicide.”
They also noted that no other individuals are currently believed to have been involved in the incident.
Helms graduated with a degree in elementary education, and Martin graduated with a degree in psychology on Saturday, May 17, according to the university’s graduation program.
Following the incident, the University posted to its Facebook page saying: “Thank you to all who have reached out to us through messages and offered to support in so many meaningful ways. We are overwhelmed by your kindness. We are a close community, and this outpouring of care is a powerful reminder of who we are. We do not take it for granted. #PioneerStrong.”

A woman who went missing in the mountains for weeks has revealed just how she fought to stay alive.
Tiffany Slaton managed to survive a whopping 24 days alone, lost, and with minimal equipment trekking through the Sierra Nevada, California, mountains, after what was meant to be a three-day solo camping trip turned into a hefty expedition that almost claimed her life.
She faced adverse weather conditions, an avalanche, and a serious fall that knocked her unconscious and injured her leg, with officials saying it’s a ‘miracle’ she managed to survive.
Tiffany had set off on a trip on April 20 to explore Shaver and Huntington lakes in Fresno County but was reported missing by her concerned parents on April 29 when they didn’t hear from her for nine days.

Emergency responders launched a full-scale search party for Tiffany between May 6 to May 10 across Sierra National Forest, but found no trace of her.
The Jeffersonville, Georgia native was eventually found the day before her 28th birthday, some 40 miles away at Vermillion Valley Resort.
When she was finally found by the resort’s owner on Wednesday (May 14), officials say she had endured 13 snowstorms and climbed to altitudes of 11,000 feet.
She also lost 10lbs during her ordeal, as well as her tent, sleeping bags, and bike, leaving her with just a lighter, a knife, and some snacks.
Now, the 28-year-old has revealed what lengths she went to in order to stay alive.

Not long into her journey, Tiffany said she fell off a cliff and was unable to make it to the main track due to a recent avalanche.
She claimed she was unconscious for around two hours and had to splint one leg and ‘pop the other knee back into place’.
All five of her desperate calls to 911 failed to go through, so she resorted to trekking towards the nearest Starbucks, some 18 miles away, after GPS managed to work.
“I ended up on this very long, arduous journey that I journaled to try and keep sane and eventually managed to get to civilization,” she said.
Tiffany, a traveling dialysis technician as well as an experienced archer with horticultural training, said her talents helped her to forage in the wildness and, crucially, keep calm.

She wrote in a diary, gathered leeks to eat that she knew were native in the area, drank melted snow, and made a tea from manzanita and pine needles.
“The worst thing you can do in an emergency situation is panic,” she said.
On the last leg of her journey, Tiffany managed to navigate a 9,000-foot peak buried beneath 12 feet of snow which led her to a cabin and, finally, safety.
At first sight, she said she thought she was ‘hallucinating’ and considered she had ‘managed to make it to the North Pole’.
But once inside, she found the ‘best sleeping bag I had ever seen’ and was found just eight hours later by Christopher Gutierrez, who, as luck would have it, was able to get to the cabin after snowplows happened to clear the roads that day.
Tiffany said: “That was the 13th heavy snowstorm I had been in, and it was going to be the last one.

“If he hadn’t come that day, they would’ve found my body there.”
Christopher also recalled the moment he found her, saying: “She pops out, didn’t say a word, just ran up, and all she wanted was a hug.
“It was a pretty surreal moment. And that’s when I knew. That’s when I realized who this was.”
“I really do have a new faith in humanity,” Tiffany added.
Fresno County Sheriff John Zanoni also said in a press conference that her story is what ‘they would make movies about’.
“I would have never anticipated her in my wildest dreams being able to get back as far as she did,” he added. “It is truly an incredible story of perseverance, determination and survival.”

Earlier this week, human remains were discovered in an area of New England, not far from Taylor Swift’s holiday home.
Police confirmed to PEOPLE that suspected human remains were found in the Watch Hill, Rhode Island, area, the affluent spot where the singer’s home is located.
Officers attended the scene on Everett Avenue at around 9:30am on Wednesday, May 14 and found ‘what appeared to be a human leg bone’, the news outlet reports.
The Westerly Police Department said in a statement: “Investigators are awaiting official confirmation of the identity of the remains.
“No foul play is suspected at this time.”
The discovery has sparked concern among locals, especially because a dozen other remains have been found across towns in New England, including Connecticut (New Haven, Norwalk, Groton, and Killingly), as well as Foster (Rhode Island), Framingham, Plymouth, and Springfield (Massachusetts).
While it’s fuelled rumours even further about a ‘serial killer’, it’s important to note that police have confirmed they are not looking for a murderer on the loose, meanwhile not all of the deaths are being treated as suspicious.
Following the discovery of a woman’s body in Springfield last month, identified as 45-year-old Meggan Meredith, district attorney Anthony Gulluni said: “Unverified claims can compromise active investigations…
“At this time, there is no indication that these incidents are connected to each other or they are part of a larger public safety threat.”
Despite the police statements on the speculation, online sleuths are convinced that there could be a serial killer in New England.
Facebook groups and threads have been set up with thousands discussing the cases and how they could be linked.

Where have the bodies been found?
The body of a woman, identified as 35-year-old Paige Fannon, was found by a police scuba team on March 6 from the Norwalk River, the New Haven Register reported.
On the same day Fannon was found, officers over in Plymouth were called out to reports of remains found by a hunter in the woods, which was later confirmed to be a human skull with its jaw and nasal area missing.
Police in Groton then discovered the body of a woman, believed to be between 40 to 60 years old, inside a suitcase near a cemetery on March 19, as per WTNH.
That same week, authorities in New Haven found the decomposed body of Denise Leary on March 21, who was found in a ‘state of decay’ in a wooded area behind a home. Then on March 25, the body of 56-year-old Michele Romano was found in a wooded area off Plainfield Pike in Rhode Island, as per WJAR.
On April 9 and 10, unidentified remains of a man believed to be between 25 to 45 years old were found in Killingly, Connecticut, as well as further unidentified remains in Massachusetts.
On April 21, more unidentified remains were located in the Seekonk River in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, by a boater.
The next day, a woman later identified as Meggan Meredith, died after being found ‘unresponsive’ off a bike path in Springfield which police are treating as a homicide.
On April 23, the bodies of two men were found in the woods near a Walmart in Salem, Massachusetts.

There have been a string of other discoveries in the region (Boston 25 News)
What have police said?
Police are categorically ruling out a serial killer. In fact, some believe the speculation could cause more harm than good.
After the latest suspected human remains were found this week, Westerly Police Chief Paul Gingerella told Fox News Digital: “As far as I’m concerned, as far as right now, this has nothing to do with any serial killer [or] any New England murderer.”
Meanwhile, Hampden County District Attorney Anthony Gulluni said the rumours could compromise investigations, reports MetroWest.
“While online conversations around these incidents continue to grow, we urge the public to be mindful of the role that social media can play in spreading fear or misinformation,” he said.
“Unverified claims can compromise active investigations and contribute to a sense of chaos that does not reflect the full picture.”
Could there really be a New England serial killer?
Following all the speculation, a criminologist has spoken about the likelihood of a serial killer in the region.
James Alan Fox, a Northeastern University criminologist, told Northeastern Global News: “Most serial killers have some commonality in their victims.
“Usually it’s the sex, race, age or physical features of the victims. That’s not always true, of course, but they tend to have a particular preference for the victim type. But in these cases there are so many dissimilarities.”
Fox also said that there were no similarities in where the bodies were found, either.
“There’s no pattern to the dump sites,” said Fox. “A lot of serial killers will have a particular dump site where they dispose of their bodies. So when police do find evidence from a serial killer, they tend to find multiple bodies because the killer feels comfortable about disposing of bodies in that location.
“More than 70% of serial killers kill in one locale, typically around their home or workplace or somewhere where they know the roads and the escape patterns.
“It’s much safer for them to kill in a place where they know the terrain. Plus they tend to have jobs and families, which means they kill part time — literally, they have some free time to kill. And in general they can’t spend weeks and months traveling around finding victims.”

Police have confirmed there are two individuals they are considering people of interest in connection with the death of a 12 year-old girl.
Police have confirmed Jocelyn Nungaray was found dead after sneaking out of her family home in Houston, Texas on Sunday (June 15).
The 12-year-old’s body was found in a shallow creek below a bridge on West Rankin Road near I-45, with the cause of death being determined as strangulation by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
Authorities have also released CCTV footage of the last time Jocelyn was seen before her death.
In the clip, she is seen walking into a 7-Eleven in Houston on Sunday with two men described by police as ‘persons of interest.’
They were seen wearing baseball-style caps, according to investigators, who are now calling for information from the public about the two individuals.
The Houston Police Department wrote on X: ‘UPDATE: Our homicide detectives want to speak with these two male persons of interest regarding the death of a 12-year-old female at 400 West Rankin Rd.”
This comes after Mayor John Whitmire also revealed details about Jocelyn’s final phone call to her boyfriend, 13, before her death.
Whitmire told a press conference that her mom last saw her around 10pm Sunday when she put everyone to bed, meaning that Jocelyn possibly snuck out between 10pm and 12am.

He said: “It appears that he [her boyfriend] last talked to her at a convenience store around midnight, heard her talking to two grown-ups.
“There will be a report issued shortly with very, very bad, horrific circumstances.”
Jocelyn’s mother, Alexis Nungaray, spoke about the difficulty in telling her little brother that ‘his older sister is never coming home’.
Speaking to local media, she said: “She was so young. She was 12, you took my baby away, you took her away.”
She also said that she didn’t know why her daughter left their home, adding: “I always told her, ‘Never leave the house, never leave unattended, always be safe. There’s people around here that are crazy.’

“I just hope, I hope they are found because Jocelyn was a fighter. She fought hard. She needs justice.
“She didn’t deserve this and she needs to be rested at peace.”
The family have also set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral costs.
People who may have any information about the two men are encouraged to call HPD Homicide at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 713-222-TIPS.
There is also a $5,000 reward for any information about the case.

Scientists claim they’ve found the exact spot of Noah’s Ark site in unprecedented radar scans.
The story of Noah’s Ark comes to life in the Bible’s Book of Genesis, during which there’s a ginormous flood that threatens to wipe out the world and all living creatures, aside from those spared on Noah’s large homemade ship.
Believers of the Ark guestimate it would’ve spanned the equivalent of one and a half football fields in length, so God only knows (literally) how Noah managed to cram a pair of every animal species on Earth in there.
Now, however, American researchers claim to have cracked the code of the mystery, after ground-penetrating radar technology unearthed the possible remains of the Ark embedded in the ground in Turkey.
Speaking to the Christian Broadcasting Network, Andrew Jones, an independent researcher who worked on the project, said: “It is exactly what you’d expect to find if this were a man-made boat, consistent with the biblical specifications of Noah’s Ark.”

It does look like a boat (NoahsArkScans.com)
Jones and his team work with Noah’s Ark Scans, which he said is a ‘loose organization’ of people ‘interested in pursuing scientific work’ on the ark’s site.
The scientists began scanning the mountains of eastern Turkey, roughly 18 miles south of Mount Ararat, which makes sense as this is where the Bible pinpoints the boat’s end point, when they made the eureka discovery.
The specific spot is actually the Durupinar site, which not only looks like a boat-shaped mound but measures up 538 feet long – the same dimensions of the infamous ark that saved humanity and the animal kingdom some 4,300 years ago, reports New York Post.
The radar appeared to pick-up a 13-foot ‘tunnel’ roaming through the center of the structure, the Daily Mail added, as well as subterranean layers plus ‘central and side corridors or hallways running through.’
The team thinks this corroborates with the Book of Genesis 6:16 which revealed Noah was instructed to make ‘lower, second and third decks’.

Andrew Jones is convinced the scans prove it’s the ark (CBN News/YouTube)
Interestingly, angular structures some 20 feet below the surface were also discovered, which the team ponder could’ve been the quarters beneath the deck.
And that’s not all, as they say even the organic matter growing on the site lends to their theory.
Jones said: “We noticed that the grass growing within the boat-shaped formation is a different color compared to the area just outside it.”
Once tested, they found it had lower pH levels than the soil just beyond the formation, which they say is ‘consistent with rotting wood’ and indicates a human touch.
William Crabtree, another member of Noah’s Ark Scans, commented: “If you know soil science — as I’m a soil scientist — you’ll understand that potassium levels, organic matter, and pH can all be influenced by decaying organic material.

The scans of the site (NoahsArkScans.com)
“If this was a wooden boat and the wood had rotted over time, we would expect to see elevated levels of potassium, changes in pH, and higher organic content — and that’s exactly what we’re finding.”
Yet despite its apparent preservation, Jones doesn’t expect to find anything concrete beneath the grassy and mountainous terrain, claiming that the remains only serve as a ‘chemical imprint’ of ‘pieces of wood and in the ground’.
Still, Jones surmised: “This is not what you’d expect to see if the site were simply a solid block of rock or the result of random mudflow debris,” instead saying he believed it squared up with the Biblical description of the legendary vessel.
Next, the team say they want to carry out a core drilling survey to ‘give us a much clearer picture of whether this is truly something man-made,’ Jones added.
