Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has slammed Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ and warns of consequences when the country ‘wakes up’.
Since Donald Trump returned to the White House for his second term in January, he’s been on a mission to rescue the economy and spark a new ‘golden age’ for the country.
To this end, he announced a series of tariff hikes on the US’ global trading partners and has been looking at slashing taxes for American workers.
Earlier this week, White House Republicans passed a legislation extending his 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act to the tune of multitrillion-dollar tax breaks.
What is Trump’s ‘big, beautiful bill’?
The House launched a debate on Trump’s so-called ‘big, beautiful bill’ before midnight and by early morning on Thursday (May 22), the vote was called, 215-214, passing through by a single vote with Democrats staunchly opposed to it.
The proposed law, which will now go to the Senate, includes a raft of tax cuts, including no taxes on tips for workers in the service and beauty industries and a freeze on taxes on those working overtime, all while redirecting funds to military and border security.

It would also pave the way for tax deductions on up to $10,000 in interest on auto loans for cars made on US soil and $200 taxes on gun silencers.
However, it’s touted as a temporary exemption that will come to an end in 2028 – or 2029 for the car loan interest deal.
Also on the bill is a $500 hike in child tax credit, totalling $2,500 through to 2028, and controversial changes to Medicaid and SNAP food stamp benefits to make up for scores of the lost tax revenue.
This includes more frequent eligibility checks, cuts in funds for undocumented immigrants and a ban on children and adults accessing funds for gender transition services.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated 8.6 million fewer people would have healthcare coverage as a result while the changes to Medicaid, food stamps and other services pose a saving of one trillion dollars.
What has Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said about the Big Beautiful Bill and why is she concerned?
However, not everyone is keen on the plan, with New York Democrat AOC taking the chance to criticize the move in an explosive statement on the House floor on Wednesday night.
She said the so-called ‘big beautiful bill’ will affect the healthcare of 13.7 million Americans.
Ocasio-Cortez said: “Republicans are going to try to tell you every distraction in the book from that essential number,” claiming the legislation had been compiled ‘in a matter of hours on the back of a napkin’.

“For my Republican colleagues who are sure what is in and not in this bill, in this process that has been this rushed, when you wake up this morning, you will realize that you voted to defund Planned Parenthood and to take away health care from 13.7 million Americans,” she continued.
“When this country wakes up in the morning, there will be consequences to pay for this.”
The CBO also said the lowest-income households in the country would see their resources decrease while higher earners would see a boost.
What other Democrats say about Trump’s tax bill
“This is one ugly bill,” House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York added, as the opposition continue to call it a ‘big, bad bill’ or a ‘big, broken promise’.

The comments come as scores of Republicans dropped their opposition to save the 1,000-page-plus Bill that is considered central to the Republican and Trump agenda.
The administration warned that ‘failure to pass [it] would be the ultimately betrayal’.
They believe the package will be ‘rocket fuel’ for the rocky US economy.
Speaker Mike Johnson said just before the vote: “To put it simply, this bill gets Americans back to winning again.”
Representative Erin Houchin also said it would ‘unlock the ‘Golden Age’ of America,’ as Trump said in his inauguration speech.
What stage is the Big Beautiful Bill up to?
House Republicans stayed up all night to debate the bill, with last-minute concessions added before it slithered through by just one vote.
Now, it will go to the Senate for consideration.
A bill must pass through both the House and Senate in order to for the President to sign it into law.

A former Wall Street executive was just handed a new job, and he made it very clear just how much of a shock this was while speaking to his employees.
Frank Bisignano has now been sworn in as head of the Social Security Administration, one of the largest federal agencies that’s responsible for distributing retirement, disability, and survivor benefits to more than 70 million Americans.
But this seemed to come as a bit of a shock for Bisignano himself, as he held a town hall with Social Security managers from around the country on May 21 and got very candid.
In a leaked audio from the meeting, he insisted that he was not looking for a job from Donald Trump and essentially had no clue about the position.

He said: “So, I get a phone call and it’s about Social Security. And I’m really, I’m really not, I swear I’m not looking for a job.
“And I’m like, ‘Well, what am I going to do?’ So, I’m Googling Social Security. You know, one of my great skills, I’m one of the great Googlers on the East Coast.
“I’m like, ‘What the heck’s the commissioner of Social Security?’”
Hilariously, during the meeting, he also bemoaned about media leaks from within the agency…from a now leaked piece of audio.
He continued: “Put that as the headline for the Post: ‘Great Googler in Chief. Chief in Googler’ or whatever.”
“By the way, I like to have fun at work, we are allowed to laugh, we are allowed to have fun, we are allowed to know each other’s family, we are allowed to be normal, how is that.”
Well despite this, people on social media haven’t exactly been kind about Bisignano seemingly not having a clue what his job is or will entail.
One Twitter user commented: “So he’s 100% in on the time tested and foolproof ‘fake it till you make it’ strategy. Got it.”
Another said: “The qualifications to hold a position in the Trump Admin is to NOT be qualified. If your resume has relevant experience, you don’t even get past the phone screen.”
A third added: “This makes my blood boil. These are NOT serious people, but they’ve accepted serious jobs just for novelty?”

However, some users did defend the new appointment.
One person commented: “People act like you need some elite PhD to run the agency…. You don’t…. What it needs is someone who’s actually built things, managed huge teams, and delivered results.
“Frank Bisignano has done that at the highest level, running billion-dollar companies with real accountability.”

People are pointing out there could be a major issue if the president is to accept a ‘palace in the sky’ as a gift.
The Trump administration is reportedly preparing to accept an insanely pricey, first-of-its-kind gift given to the US from a foreign government.
The luxurious Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet, that comes in at $400 million with the nickname of a ‘flying palace’, is apparently due to be handed over to the POTUS from the royal family of Qatar.
According to ABC News, Donald Trump will be able to use the plane as its new Air Force One jet until he leaves office, where it is tipped to transfer ownership into the Trump Presidential Library Foundation.

The 13-year-old aircraft will apparently be modified to meet US military criteria to transport the president and transferred to the presidential library before January 1, 2029.
Any costs associated with the transfer will also allegedly be covered by the US Air Force.
It is anticipated the grand gift will be unveiled next week when the president visits Qatar, according to sources who have been briefed in on the plans.
Trump has toured the plane before when it was parked at the West Palm Beach International Airport, Florida, in February.
However, the present is bound to raise questions over the ethics of the sitting president accepting such a valuable item from a foreign power, particularly with concerns over possible bribery.
Dozens on Reddit say their employment contracts prohibit them from accepting gifts of major value, with some saying they can’t take anything worth more than $50 worth a year.

Another Redditor said they work ‘federal adjacent’ and have a limit of $25 a year – meaning one time they had to refuse a $28 t-shirt from a supplier.
Others slammed the lavish gift as ‘bribery on the highest scale’.
“Nothing says American exceptionalism like not being able to build our own AF-1. Nothing says MAGA failure like actually accepting this as a gift,” they added.
Anticipating such backlash, sources told the news outlet that lawyers for the White House counsel’s office and the Department of Justice have already been drafted in.
Under the advice, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is reportedly to conclude that it is legal to accept the mega-jet as a gift and later hand it over to the Trump library.
It will also state that doing so does not violate any bribery laws or the Constitution’s prohibition of any US government official accepting gifts ‘from any King, Prince or foreign state’.
Sources added Attorney General Pam Bondi and Trump’s own top White House lawyer David Warrington concluded it would be legally permission to receive it and transfer it to Trump’s presidential library before the end of his term.
Both the White House and the DOJ determine that, since the gift is not conditioned on any official act, it bypasses such clauses about bribery – and cannot breach the rule about foreign gifts because the plane is being given to the US Air Fore rather than any specific individual.

Donald Trump has made a surprising u-turn with Maine amidst his battle with the state over transgender pupils in school sports.
Earlier this year, the president had a heated debate with Maine governor Janet Mills over his executive order that bans trans athletes from competing in women’s sports.
In a meeting on February 21, Trump told Mills she must comply with the order and threatened to pull funding from the state, including federal funds for administrative and technological functions in schools, if she refused to follow.
The president told her: “We are federal law, you better do it. You better do it, because you’re not going to get federal funding… Your population doesn’t want men in women’s sports.”
Mills promptly replied: “We’ll see you in court.”
“Good. I’ll see you in court. I’ll look forward to that. That should be a real easy one.” Trump said. “And enjoy your life after, governor, because I don’t think you’ll be in elected politics.”
Now, it has appeared Trump has softened his stance by hitting pause on efforts to freeze funds that were used for the state’s child nutrition program, reports The New York Times.

In response, Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey said the state would withdraw the lawsuit it had filed against the US Department of Agriculture.
“It’s unfortunate that my office had to resort to federal court just to get USDA to comply with the law and its own regulations,” Frey said. “But we are pleased that the lawsuit has now been resolved and that Maine will continue to receive funds as directed by Congress to feed children and vulnerable adults.”
Frey said the federal funds were used to pay for food preparation in schools, child care centers and help towards feeding disabled adults.
The conflict unravelled when a letter from the Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins explained there was a disagreement between the state and federal governments over whether Maine was complying with the order, Title IX, that prohibits discrimination in education based on sex.
In a statement in April, Rollins said her agency was reviewing grants awarded to Maine by the Biden administration and called them ‘wasteful, redundant, or otherwise against the priorities of the Trump Administration’.

Days later, Maine’s Department of Education stated it could not access sources of federal funds for a state nutrition program, prompting the state to sue the Trump administration on the grounds of affecting children and vulnerable adults.
Frey said: “The food doesn’t just buy itself, deliver itself, cook itself,” before adding that the Trump administration had attempted to ‘bully’ Maine.
Maine’s attorneys argued that the child nutrition program should be in receipt of $1.8 million for the current fiscal year, while prior funds that were awarded but were blocked came to more than $900,000, according to court documents.
The lawsuit also stated the program was expecting a sum of around $3 million that usually comes every July for a summer meal program and meal reimbursement.
A federal judge ordered the administration to release the funds last month and said Maine was likely to succeed its legal challenge.
Celebrating the news, Mills said in a statement: “The state of Maine went to court and fought this unlawful attempt to freeze critical funding for our school lunch program – and we won.
“I applaud the work of Attorney General Frey and his staff in representing the state in this action against USDA, and preserving healthy school meals for 172,000 Maine school children.”

A Democratic Party strategist has made a bold prediction that Donald Trump’s administration will ‘collapse’ pretty soon.
The infamous political consultant, James Carville, has made a bold suggestion that the president’s White House team will fall in a matter of weeks as a consequence of Trump’s recent actions.
The 80-year-old author said the downfall will come as Trump’s approval numbers continue to plummet – as the president fired thousands of government officials and signed off on several controversial executive orders within his first month in office.
Meanwhile, his ‘First Buddy’, Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is tasked with cutting federal spending, which has sparked concern across the country.

These moves could cause the US economy to spiral, and tempt Republicans to cross over while Democrats can sit back and watch it unfold, Carville claimed.
Speaking to Mediaite’s Dan Abrams, he said: “Democrats need to play possum. This whole thing is collapsing.”
He referred to a poll that suggested Trump’s approval ratings dropped from the low 50s to the upper 30s and went on to say it would take ‘less than 30 days’ for the administration to crumble.
In fact, he said public opinion has already started and the Trump administration is already in the ‘midst’ of falling.

He added: “We’re in the midst of a collapse. This is the lowest approval—not even close—that any president has ever had at a comparable time.”
Carville went on to say Democrats should ‘hold your fire’ and that it’s going to be ‘easy pickings’ in six weeks.
“Just lay back,” he added. “It’s going to happen quickly.”
The strategist’s analysis comes as Trump recently criticized Carville for questioning Fox News’ facts when it came to the president’s popularity.
On Sean Hannity’s show, Carville had said: “I’m reading these polls saying the Democrats are 13 points up in the congressional generic, that Donald Trump has the lowest approval rating of any president at this point in his presidency in American history.
“So, your viewers are getting one view. And I’m reading another view. One of us is right and one of us is wrong. It’s that simple. Have they got fact checkers at Fox?”
Taking to his own social media platform, Truth Social, the President hit back saying he had the ‘best polling numbers’ he’s ever had before calling Carville a ‘loser’.
“The Democrats, run by broken down losers like James Carville, whose weak of mind and body, are going crazy, and just don’t know what to do,” Trump wrote. “They have lost their confidence and spirit – They have lost their minds!”
