Jennifer Lopez has officially filed for divorce from Ben Affleck.

The Hustlers star filed legal documents on Tuesday (August 20) in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, which have been seen by numerous news outlets, such as the BBC.

According to TMZ, they were not filed by a lawyer but by pro per, which means Lopez did it herself without an attorney.

Moreover, Lopez listed their date of separation as April 26, 2024, as per Variety.

The documents filed also reportedly don’t indicate whether or not there is a prenuptial agreement between the couple, the BBC reports.

This would mean that whatever earnings Affleck and Lopez made during their two years of marriage would be considered community property.

The documents also allegedly reveal that Lopez waived spousal support and is asking the judge to deny Affleck such support as well.

Affleck and Lopez were one of Hollywood’s biggest couples in the noughties, having met in 2002 on the set of 2003’s Gigli, in which they both starred.

They were quickly dubbed ‘Bennifer’ by the press and soon got engaged the same year, however, the wedding was called off in 2004 – and they eventually called it quits on their relationship.

In 2021, the pair rekindled their romance and eventually tied the knot in a Las Vegas ceremony on July 16, 2022.

They proceeded to have a traditional wedding ceremony in Savannah, Georgia on August 20, 2022.

Lopez also seems to have filed the divorce papers on the ceremony’s two-year anniversary, CNN reports.

The pair had been at the epicenter of divorce rumors for some time, though nothing was confirmed until now.

This marks Lopez’s fourth marriage – with her previous marriage being to singer Marc Anthony – and Affleck’s second.

His first marriage was to actor and Daredevil co-star Jennifer Garner, with whom he has three children.

UNILAD has reached out to representatives of Lopez and Affleck for comment.

Jennifer Lopez has spoken out for the first time following her very public split from Ben Affleck.

The hitmaker wed Affleck in 2022, but after just two short years of marriage, Lopez filed for divorce.

There had been much speculation about the status of their relationship in the months running up to the confirmation of their break-up, as the celebrity pair had seldom been seen together for some time.

Lopez was the one of file the papers, notably without any legal presentation with her (something that was labeled as ‘unheard of’ for a celeb to do), and she cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for her and Affleck’s split.

Lopez hadn’t really addressed the breakdown of her marriage from her Batman star beau, but has since done an extremely candidly interview with comedian Nikki Glaser for Interview Magazine.

In their conversation, Lopez compared a marriage coming to an end to your house going up in flames.

She said: “When your whole house blows up, you’re standing there in the rubble going, ‘How do I not ever let that happen again?’

“And then you start examining it little by little saying, ‘OK, I did this, this was my part in it, this was what I should have seen early on, this is what I didn’t look at’. Those things are what really are the lessons.”

Lopez was also asked if she has any regrets about the recent pain she’s endured following her split from Affleck.

“Not one second,” the mom-of-two shared. “That doesn’t mean it didn’t almost take me out for good. It almost did.

“But now, on the other side of it, I think to myself, ‘F**k, that is exactly what I needed. Thank you, god. I’m sorry it took me so long. I’m sorry that you had to do this to me so many times. I should have learned it two or three times ago. I get it. You had to hit me really hard over the head with a f**king sledgehammer. You dropped the house on me. Don’t have to do it again.'”

While she now ‘gets it’, Lopez went on to note that this ‘doesn’t mean I have everything figured out’.

The singer explained: “Now I’m excited, when you say you’re just going to be on your own. Yes, I’m not looking for anybody, because everything that I’ve done over the past 25, 30 years, being in these different challenging situations, what can I f**king do when it’s just me flying on my own.”

Ben Affleck opened up with a wholesome comment about his ex-wife Jennifer Lopez and their respective kids as he appeared on the red carpet for his new movie, The Accountant 2.

Affleck spoke about the relationship between himself, Lopez and each of their children from the Los Angeles premier of his new action-packed flick, in which he returns as Christian Wolff – aka The Accountant – alongside his on-screen brother, Jon Bernthal.

Affleck brought along with him his three children, Violet Anne, Fin, and Samuel, who he shares with his first wife, actor Jennifer Garner, but Lopez’s own children, twins Max and Emme, were also in attendance at the event.

Lopez shares her twins, who are 17 years old, with her ex-husband, Marc Anthony.

Affleck expressed his delight at having all the children there to support him, telling Entertainment Tonight: “The kids are here, Jen’s kids are here. I’m very, very excited. I love when all the kids come out.”⁠

He said: “Listen, I don’t read the stuff online much, and sometimes I get the sense that people perpetuate this idea of … they wanna find something negative to talk about. For the record, Jennifer Lopez is spectacular, great to my kids, great ongoing relationship with them.

“I love her kids. They are wonderful,” he said. “She is enormously important, tremendous person of a lot of integrity who I adore and am grateful to.”

“I’m thrilled that the kids are here with me,” Affleck continued. “That’s the kind of thing where the relationship that you have with children like that is a joy in my life. Those kids are amazing and I’m glad that this is a movie they want to come to.”⁠

⁠Affleck’s comments come after he previously spoke about his split with Lopez in an interview with GQ, in which he insisted there was ‘no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue’.

“It’s just a story about people trying to figure out their lives and relationships in ways that we all sort of normally do,” he said, adding: “For one thing, you start going, ‘Okay, clearly this person has got these issues. Clearly they have these issues’, and the reason I don’t want to share that, is just sort of embarrassing. It feels vulnerable.”

The subject of a divorce is never an easy conversation, there’s no doubt about that, but it’s certainly important to break the news – particularly to children – in a sensitive manner.

The news broke last year in August that Lopez and Affleck were getting a divorce after getting married two years prior.

Lopez listed their date of separation as April 26, 2024, however, both she and Affleck have kept the details of their relationship under wraps over the past few months.

Lopez filed for divorce with the Los Angeles County Superior Court, citing ‘irreconcilable differences’.

The pair have both done interviews in recent months, however, and the divorce was of course on the agenda.

In a recent interview, Lopez detailed how she broke the news of the separation to Emme and Max, who she had in a previous relationship with Marc Anthony.

She told El País: “I had a really tough year. Unexpected things happened. And so, I read a lot of books. I did a lot of self-introspection.

“I did meditation. I prayed a lot. I wanted to improve my relationship with God. I wanted to kind of really solidify the family unit that is me and my two children, my twins.”

Lopez continued: “I said, ‘I promise you, this is a difficult time, but you’re going to see that I’ll come out the other side stronger and better’. I promised them that and I did it.

“And they feel it now. That gives me a great sense of peace in my life.”

Ever since the divorce, Lopez said she has focused on improving her own wellbeing as well as her family’s.

She continued to El País: “I read a lot of books on childhood, marriage, relationships, different styles of love, the brain, science … And over the years, I’ve done individual therapy, couples therapy, family therapy. I’ve had everything, I’m always kind of searching.

“I think it’s all about learning about yourself. It’s all about knowing yourself. You have to be ready for that. And you have to want it. And, even when you want it, it’s hard to change certain things. But you can.”

And while a divorce can be a complicated time for many, Lopez is looking on the bright side.

“Everybody goes through hard times in their life. And it’s what you do in those moments that really does define you,” the singer added.

“Not the relationship, not the man: what defines you is what you’re doing with the experiences that you’re faced with. I take those experiences — whether they’re good or bad — and I bind them.”

Affleck previously said he was ‘embarrassed’ about opening up about the issues he and Lopez were having, simply saying that it ‘feels vulnerable’.

The former celebrity couple met in 2002 on the set of the movie Gigli, a movie that released the following year.

That was in the March, and come the November, Lopez and Affleck were engaged.

Lopez described her then-fiancé as ‘brilliantly smart … loving. Charming. Affectionate’.

The pair were truly in love.

January 2004: The celebrity couple call it quits

After initially postponing the wedding, Lopez and Affleck officially separated in early 2004.

Lopez’s representatives said at the time: “Jennifer Lopez has ended her engagement to Ben Affleck. At this difficult time, we ask that you respect her privacy.

“I am not going to confirm anything about his personal life. We don’t want to get dragged into quicksand. Everybody wants a war. It’s not happening from our side.”

April 2021: Lopez and Affleck rekindle their relationship

After staying in contact, the pair rekindled their relationship in April 2021, before going Instagram official in the July of that year.

July 2022: The couple tie the knot

Just three months after getting engaged again, Lopez and Affleck tied the knot at a private ceremony in Las Vegas.

“It’s a beautiful outcome that this has happened in this way at this time in our lives where we can really appreciate and celebrate each other and respect each other,” Lopez said.

August 2024: Lopez files for divorce

Some two years after the celebrity pair married, Lopez filed for a divorce in August last year – something which was finalised in August last year.

“She tried really hard to make things work, and is heartbroken,” a source close to Lopez told People.

The divorce was finalized in January 2025.
