Veteran actor Gillian Anderson spoke about the awkwardness of filming sex scenes and one aspect that makes them worse.
Acting for a living can come with a lot of challenges and one most don’t often consider is the logistics and workings of sex scenes.
While some sex scenes can be integral to the story, most viewers don’t think about how many takes and different shots are needed to really complete the steamy scenes.
The complexity of these scenes is also why many actors prefer there to be intimacy coordinators on set.
Speaking to the Sun, actress Gillian Anderson spoke about the ins and outs, pun intended, of filming the scenes as she promotes her latest film, The Salt Path which has a sex scene that saw her and co-star Jason Isaacs in a two-man tent on the southwest coast of England.
Anderson admitted they can occasionally prove awkward, especially when you don’t really know the actor you are working with.

She said: “That is something you just expect as an actor.
“That’s part of what one does. I had an experience for many, many years working with the same actor every day.
“I’ve also done sex scenes on the first day of working, which is never a joy at any time during filming.”
Speaking about working with Isaacs, she praised the actor for being amenable.
She added: “So you’re thrown stuff all the time and just show whatever you’re given.
“And Jason makes it very easy. He’s very amenable, he’s very likeable.
“And certainly physically, we feel like we’re the same language — certainly by the end.
“We feel like our journey is baked into us, and we feel like we’re part of the same conversation.”

Anderson praised Isaac for being so easy and open to work with, including for their sex scenes (Black Bear)
Anderson even joked about her character Raynor Winn having sex in a tent as part of the story, simply asking why not have sex anywhere, admitting, sure, it might prove uncomfortable – but ‘needs must’
Anderson has long been a supporter of female sexual empowerment and even released a book back in 2024, entitled ‘Want’.
It was a collection of anonymous female sexual fantasies and Gillian noted that one of the fantasies mentioned is her own, although she hasn’t divulged which, though its likely some fans have taken a guess at which.
She has hinted that in a follow-up book she might include more of her own secret desires.

Modern Family star Sofia Vergara might seem like the kind of person who has nothing to be self-conscious about, but even the biggest and most beautiful stars can still find ways to be insecure.
Vergara opened up during a Netflix FYSEE event on Sunday (June 2) about concerns that actually ‘kept her awake’ at night while she was filming the drama series Griselda.
The 51-year-old actor starred as Colombian cocaine trafficker Griselda Blanco in the series, but among the scenes of drugs and drama, there were also some more saucy moments.
At one point in the show, Griselda shares a passionate moment in bed with her husband, Dario Sepulveda.
While they were meant to be portraying a good time, Vergara admitted she actually had a lot of worries running through her mind.

When asked if she’d ever felt out of her depth during the show, as per The Sun, Vergara responded: “The sex scene. I don’t think I’ve ever done like a sex scene. With Jay [in Modern Family] I didn’t do anything.”
“I’m 50! I mean, when I was 30, I wouldn’t have worried,” Vergara continued. “I think I was worried that I was going to look horrific.”
The actor went on to reveal there was one feature in particular that she was concerned about during the shoot, saying: “I was like, ‘Where are they shooting me? The cellulite? From the side. Uh, I’m vain I guess. That one kept me awake I think’.”
Though Vergara was conscious about what she’d look like while filming, she admitted the scene actually ‘came out good’ when it was finally released.

“It’s really dark and Andy, the director, is very artistic and he made me feel super comfortable and he’s like, ‘We’re never going to stay like a long time on you [the camera]’,” she explained.
Vergara’s admission comes as she recently told Allure she would be open to having all sorts of cosmetic procedures done if she had the time.
“I feel like you have to take advantage of everything that is out there,” she said. “I mean, if you care about aging. Nothing wrong if you don’t care about it. It’s not the end of the world. But if you do, now there’s so much stuff out there.”
The actor said she was going to do ‘every plastic surgery’ possible when she’s ‘ready’, and admitted she ‘would’ve done stuff already’ if it weren’t for her job in front of a camera.

Anthony Mackie has labeled Eminem an ‘a**hole’ after sharing the set of 8 Mile together.
The 46-year-old opened up about his time shooting the 2002 musical drama, which is loosely based off Eminem’s life, detailing a surprising detail that the artist included during the iconic rap battle they feature in together.
While playing Papa Doc – whose real name is ‘Clarence’ in the show and is the head of a gang of rookie rappers – Mackie faced off with Eminem’s character, Jimmy ‘B-Rabbit’ Smith, but the rapper went a bit off script.
While appearing as a guest on the Pivot Podcast in March, Mackie explained how the rapper, real name Marshall Mathers, got a little personal with his diss track.
“We’re doing the movie and you know, Eminem is just such a brilliant dude, we’re on set one day and he’s like, ‘yo, it don’t make sense that we beefing’, I was like, ‘right’, he was like, ‘I need something, like on you’.

“So we’re talking, we talk for like two hours – like chilling, I’m like, ‘alright man I’ll see you later’. I go to the casino, the next day we’re shooting the battle scene and that’s why I’m standing there like you’re talking about me you’re not talking about Clarence!
“[It] has nothing to do with the character, you’re an a**hole Eminem! I’m like, I want to fight this motherf***er! I’m like, ‘yes, my parents are still married.'”
Yes, hilariously the ‘Without Me’ hitmaker, who wrote ‘Lose Yourself’ for the movie which went on to pick up an Oscar in 2003 for the best original song, was actually rapping about Mackie – not his character.
So, the reaction we saw on screen was as real as it gets – as he was genuinely dissed!
To rejog everyone’s memories, here is part of what Eminem said during the rap battle: “Don’t ever try to judge me, dude / You don’t know what the f*** I’ve been through.
“But I know something about you / You went to Cranbrook, that’s a private school.
“What’s the matter, dawg? You embarrassed? / This guy’s a gangster? His real name’s Clarence.”

He continues: “And Clarence lives at home with both parents / And Clarence’ parents have a real good marriage.
“This guy don’t wanna battle, he’s shook / ‘Cause ain’t no such things as halfway crooks.
“He’s scared to death, he’s scared to look / At his f***ing yearbook; f*** Cranbrook!”

A woman who told her heartbreaking story in a ‘must watch’ Netflix true crime documentary has explained why she took part following the death of her father.
The documentary, which released on the popular streaming platform earlier this month, tells the story of Jason Corbett, who moved from Limerick, Ireland, to the US in April 2011 with his two children after marrying American Molly Martens.
Jason and Molly relocated to North Carolina to get married, while Jason’s children from his previous marriage to Margaret ‘Mags’ Fitzpatrick, who died in 2006, came along too.
A Deadly American Marriage on Netflix tells viewers what happened next when Jason was brutally beaten to death with a baseball bat and brick inside his home.
Molly and her father, retired FBI agent Thomas Martens, were arrested and charged with second-degree murder, and received sentences of a minimum of 20 years and a maximum of 25 years . But after a successful appeal, the pair’s sentences were cut short and they were released in June 2024.
A Deadly American Marriage includes interviews with those impacted, including Jason’s daughter Sarah Corbett Lynch.
After the documentary dropped on Netflix, Sarah,18, sat down with Glamour to explain why she ultimately decided to take part in the Netflix doc.

And the decision ultimately came about after a conversation with Tracey Corbett-Lynch and David Lynch, her auntie and uncle who raised her.
Sarah told Glamour: “There was a lot of discussion. We all sat down and spoke about it. At the end of the day we thought, If we don’t partake in this, it’s going to go ahead anyways.
“We would like to have our voices heard in it. And there were two strong women producers who were extremely sensitive throughout the entire process, especially because of me and Jack’s ages.
“We were both minors when it started. I do believe that it shows our characters in the way that we are.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Sarah was asked about how she feels she was portrayed in the Netflix film and discussed the general perception of the documentary.
She said: “I’ve been quite happy. I was happy with my contribution, and it does feel like a certain amount of weight has been lifted off my shoulders that people are hearing us now and can understand it.
“I suppose people could ask, ‘Why did you do the documentary?’ And it wasn’t really a choice. It felt like something we were compelled to do because we never knew what way it was going to go in America.”

It’s a normal thought to wonder if actors get aroused when filming steamy scenes, but nobody ever comes out to tell the answer – until now.
You might know Kate Hudson from gems like How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, and Bride Wars and the actress is no stranger to a steamy sex scene.
Opening up to none other than British rapper, Stormzy, who asked Kate Hudson if actors ever get aroused during sex scenes – and the answer is perfect.
The pair made an appearance on the Jonathan Ross Show, where Stormzy opened up about having to film a sex scene for the video for his track ‘Hide & Seek’.
He said: “Me and the team said it needs to be a high standard actor. I’m a rubbish actor.

“The idea of me going on set with someone that’s awkward and I’m awkward… We got Saffron [Hocking] in and she’s a true professional. She made me really comfortable and led the whole thing.”
Stormzy then turned to Hudson and asked unprompted: “When I see sex scenes I’m like, ‘How do you lot do that?’ Of course it’s your job but… as your average punter, it looks extremely difficult. Can there be… arousal… everyone’s thought it!”
However, Hudson quickly responded that the way in which they are filmed tends to ‘take the fun out of it’.
“Interesting question,” she replied, laughing.
“I think it’s so mechanical and there’s so many people around. Usually they close the set and you kind of have to talk it out and the boys wear belts. It’s very… tucked. It kind of takes the fun out of it, I guess.
“Sometimes it’s more enjoyable than other times. It just depends on the circumstance and the safety that you feel with that actor and how safe the space feels. It can get awkward.”
Even though she has been in various sex scenes for work, the actor recently admitted that she’s sworn off men on the advice of her therapist.

In an interview with Alex Cooper on her podcast Call Her Daddy, Hudson revealed she took ‘like a full year’ away from dating when she was in her thirties.
She explained she was allowed to ‘talk to’ men but ‘couldn’t flirt’ or ‘even text guys’.
“I couldn’t give them my number,” she added.
She admitted that it was because her therapist advised her too.
The actor explained her therapist offered to ‘help’ her but warned she had to actually ‘do it’ and stick to the advice.
“He’s like get off the sauce,” she continued. “And, well my thing, is I always get distracted. It’s fun. I just love the, ‘Oo this is fun I’m going to text this person.'”
The actor explained she was so ready to accept the advice because she didn’t ‘want to keep repeating any patterns anymore’.
And it saw a significant improvement to her life.
That’s more than fair enough.
