Judge makes heartbreaking comments as mom that ‘sold six-year-old daughter for $1,100’ is sentenced

Joshlin Smith’s mother has been sentenced to life behind bars

The judge who sentenced Joshlin Smith’s mother and her two accomplices has given a poignant message.

Earlier today (May 29), Racquel ‘Kelly’ Smith, her boyfriend Jacquen Appollis and their friend, Steveno van Rhyn were all sentenced to life imprisonment.

The trio were convicted of kidnapping and trafficking then-six-year-old Joshlin Smith, Kelly’s daughter, who went missing from her home in Western Cape, South Africa, in February 2024. The young girl’s whereabouts remain unknown despite police continuing to hunt for her.

Law enforcement have pledged to continue their search for Joshlin. Western Cape police commissioner Thembisile Patekile told local media, per BBC: “We will not rest until we find [out] what happened to Joshlin. We are continuing day and night looking for her.”

During the trail, a witness said that in 2023 they had overheard Kelly, a mom-of-three, talking about selling her kids for 20,000 rand reach (around $1,100 USD), but also said she’d accept $275.

Meanwhile a neighbor, Lourentia Lombaard, testified that Kelly had told her that she had sold her daughter for 20,000 rand to a traditional healer known as a sangoma who ‘wanted her for her eyes and skin’.

Judge Nathan Erasmus was the one to decide the convicts’ fate today and made a heartbreaking statement during which he noted that Kelly’s grandmother had expressed concerns about her back in 2016.

“The evidence indicated that Miss Smith, in particular, was in need of social services for a prolonged period,” Erasmus told the packed courtroom, as per Jacaranda FM.

“And I wonder, when her grandmother complained in 2016 to the Department of Social Development for a protection order, what access did she [Kelly] have when she sought support from the justice system? We failed.”

Kelly, 35, is believed to have been struggling with drug addiction since she was young, over the course of which she experienced homelessness.

A social worker’s report on the mother was read out in the trial which described her life as being ‘in chaos’.

“She was unable to provide stable care for Joshlin from the beginning,” it added.

Kelly had been to rehab after giving birth to Joshlin and the young girl was cared for by Natasha Andrews, a family friend.

She and her husband hoped to adopt Joshlin but the plan fell through due to lack of parental consent.

Speaking in the trial, Andrews said: “We could have provided for her better than her mother.”

Six-year-old boy gets bullied by his entire class because of ‘stupid’ mistake made by mom

The mom was surprised at one detail on a birthday party invitation and decided to take a stand

The mom of a six-year-old boy has asked for advice after a ‘stupid’ mistake she made left her child being ‘shunned’ by his entire class.

It all started when the mom, who named herself ‘Party Pooper’ while asking for advice, received an invitation for her son to attend the birthday party of one of his classmates.

The invite had all the standard information – location, dress code, etcetera – but the mom was surprised to see it also had a link to a gift registry ‘filled with items that the little boy was hoping for’.

In a letter written to the Mail Online’s Dear Jane column, the mom explained that all of the gifts on the registry were over $40, which she thought was ‘crazy’.

She also admitted she hated ‘wasting money on silly things like plastic toys and brain-rotting junk’, so she responded to the invite asking if she could choose a gift of her own.

In response, the hosts responded to say that if the mom ‘wasn’t willing to ‘adhere to the list they’d prefer [she] didn’t bring a gift at all’.

The mom chose to do exactly that, but when the birthday boy started opening presents and realized her son hadn’t brought anything, he was left in tears.

“From there, the party was a nightmare. None of the other children would talk to my son, and I whipped him out of there as soon as possible,” the mom explained.

She claimed her son has since been ‘effectively been shunned by everyone in his class, and he has been left out of every other birthday party’, leaving her desperate to try and rectify the issue.

“My six-year-old is miserable and all because I decided to take a stupid stand against something so small and petty. I feel horrible about it, but I’m completely clueless about how to fix it,” she wrote.

After hearing the mom’s issue, Jane agreed that the gift registry sounded ‘ridiculous’ and encouraged her to avoid trying to ‘buy [her] son’s way back in to popularity’.

Instead, she advised trying to find him other friends outside of school, ‘whose friendships are not based on money or gifts’.

Jane also advised the mom to be open with her son about the issue, stressing that friendship shouldn’t be based on money, ‘but because we are good people’.

26-year-old mom with 22 biological children says she plans to have over 100 kids

20 of Kristina Ozturk’s children were born within just over a year of each other

A mom who managed to welcome 22 biological children by the time she was just 26 has admitted she’s keen to have as many as 100 kids.

I find it impressive when parents can take care of even one child without incident, but Kristina Ozturk has taken that challenge to a whole new level by welcoming almost two dozen kids.

The mom, who’s originally from Russia, shares her children with millionaire businessman Galip and spends thousands of dollars a year to pay nannies to help her around the clock with her kids, most of which are her biological children.

Galip has multiple children from a previous relationship, but Ozturk has welcomed 22 kids biologically with the help of surrogates.

Between March 2020 and July 2021, the couple paid $180,000 to surrogates to help grow their family, resulting in a family made up of – *deep breath* – Victoria, Mustafa, Maryam, Ayrin, Alice, Hassan, Judy, Harper, Teresa, Hussein, Anna, Isabella, Ismail, Mehmet, Ahmet, Ali, Kristina, Alena, Sarah, Lockman, Alparslan and Olivia.

Shockingly, 20 of the family’s children were born within just over a year of each other.

In an interview with Fabulous in 2021, Ozturk said she had dreamed about having a big family ‘since childhood’.

“My husband also dreamed about having a big, happy family. So after we met, we started to put our dream into action,” she said. “Our romantic relationship has changed but then our whole lives have changed, not just the romantic part.

“Our surrogacy clinic are amazed but happy to help us with our dream of a big family. I’m not sure if we will be the biggest family in the world, but we are planning to be the happiest family in the world for sure.”

Though she receives help from nannies, Ozturk made clear she does ‘all the things that moms normally do’.

“The only difference is the amount of kids,” she continued. “Each day is different, from planning staff schedules to shopping for my family. I can tell you one thing – my days are never boring.”

While 22 kids – or even just two – might be more than enough for some people, Ozturk and Galip have discussed having more than 100 babies in total.

The couple decided to wait until their current children are slightly older before beginning another surrogacy journey – which may be necessary anyway, since Galip was sentenced in 2023 to eight years in prison after being found guilty of illegal purchase and possession of drugs and psychotropic substances.

Following Galip’s arrest, Ozturk thanked her followers for their ‘support and kind words’.

A couple set to be wed next year have passed away following two separate ‘tragic’ car accidents on the same Louisiana high road, leaving behind their four-year-old son.

On May 16, Louisiana State Police Troopers were called to investigate two different fatal crashes on LA 67.

Shortly after 2:00am, a single-vehicle crash took place on LA 67 at Lemon Road and ‘claimed the life of 25-year-old teacher Alexus Lee’ from Baton Rouge, Louisiana State Police’s report reads.

Then, just before 3:45am, another single-vehicle crash occurred on LA 67 at Idlewild Road which saw 35-year-old truck driver John JR Collins from Clinton pass away.

It’s since been revealed Lee and Collins were engaged and reportedly planning their wedding for February 2026. The pair were also parents to four-year-old son Gabriel.

A tragic double crash ‘still under investigation’

The report details the results of a preliminary investigation, which stated Lee ‘was driving a 2013 Toyota Highlander’ when she ended up losing control of the vehicle ‘for reasons still under investigation’.

The car then exited the road and ‘struck a culvert’ before it ‘overturned’.

“Lee was unrestrained, sustained fatal injuries, and was pronounced deceased on the scene,” the report added.

Authorities reportedly called Collins to make him aware of his fiancée’s crash, Collins immediately got in his own car to travel to the scene, WAFB reported.

Collins was ‘traveling south on LA 67 at a high rate of speed in a 2016 Chevrolet Camaro’, but when the car ended up ‘failing to negotiate a right-hand curve’, it came off the road and struck a tree.

“Collins was unrestrained and was ejected from the vehicle,” the report continues. “He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene.”

Tributes have been pouring in on social media for the couple. East Feliciana Public Schools – which Alexus attended, and also taught at – took to Facebook to pay tribute to the mom.

It wrote: “It is with great sadness we inform you that Ms. Alexus Lee, 2017 graduate of East Feliciana High School and teacher at East Feliciana STEAM Academy, passed away this morning. Please join us in wrapping Ms. Lee’s family in prayer and love during this difficult time.”

“Rest Alexus Lee love you miss so much Me and sleeping Pretty smile. REST Jr wrapped arm around baby boy both parents smile down son,” another Facebook user added.

A third wrote: “You will truly be missed can’t even believe im having to say rip to you Alexus Lee. you had the most lively smile & spirit I can’t even fathom it not existing anymore. Much love for you mg.”

Police warning for drivers to ‘save lives’

Authorities have also issued a statement on the crashes, stating some advice and warning to try and prevent further crashes.

Louisiana State Police’s report resolves: “Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make responsible choices when driving: avoid impairment, fatigue, and distractions. Follow traffic laws and ensure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained”, referencing the fact that both parents appeared not to have had their seatbelts on.

“While not all crashes are preventable, simple precautions like these can save lives.”

Both incidents are reported as remaining under investigation.

An 11-year-old’s heart-warming deed helped raise a huge amount of money for his mother’s funeral in a short period of time.

Losing a parent can be a difficult for a variety of reasons but one thing many families end up worrying about is if they will be able to afford to give their loved one the proper send off.

Well, one child, who was in this tragic situation, decided to get outside and ask for help from his community.

Shannon Mount, 45, suffered a cardiac arrest at her home on July 8. She was put on life support and sadly passed away over a week later on July 16.

After her death, her son, 11-year-old Kayden Ely decided to ask for help from the people of the small town of Lindale, Georgia.

While standing by a railroad track, he held a sign that read: “Please help bury my mama.”

Kayden’s cousin and now legal guardian, Jennifer Fife, also set up a GoFundMe page to help raise some funds.

In just over a week, the goal of $7,100 to pay for funeral costs has been exceeded and, at the time of writing, more than $71,000 has been raised.

Comments on Kayden’s mother’s obituary also expressed how heartbroken they were to see the child by the railroad with the sign.

“I didn’t know Shannon, never had the pleasure of meeting her, but I saw the story of her precious little boy holding a sign by the tracks to raise money for his mommas funeral and it broke my heart,” one person wrote.

Another added: “I didn’t know Shannon but reading about her son standing by the railroad tracks with a sign for help to bury his mom really touched my heart and made me cry my prayers and condolences go out to her kids, boyfriend and family.”

Someone else commented: “I didn’t know this beautiful lady, but I ran across her son holding a sign asking for help to bury his Mother, that broke my heart into a million pieces, my deepest condolences.”

Initially the statement on the GoFundMe read: “Shannon did not have life insurance, she has an 11 year old that is left without the only thing he ever knew.

“He has been standing on side of the road for 2 days with a sign to help bury his mama. Please if yall can help.”

The fundraising page also praised Kayden, adding: “Kayden had a mission and he went on it full force.”

Fife later explained in an update that the extra money will go towards any and everything Kayden will need growing up with as well ensure experiences children his age usually have like sports and camps.
