Yesterday (May 30), Taylor Swift confirmed on her website that she had bought back her masters, which she referred to as her ‘entire life’s work’.
She’d originally lost the rights to her first six albums’ master recordings in 2019, following the expiration of her contract with Big Machine Label Group the previous year.
They were eventually sold to Scooter Braun, who formerly managed Justin Bieber, through his company, Ithaca Holdings, before being picked up by Shamrock Capital in late 2020.
However, after ’20 years of having the carrot dangled and then yanked away’, Swift managed to retain the rights once more, as she said: “All the times I was this close, reaching out for it, only for it to fall through.”
She continued: “But that’s all in the past now… I really get to say these words: All of the music I’ve ever made… now belongs to me.

All of my music videos. All the concert films. The album art and photography. The unreleased songs. The memories. The magic. The madness. Every single era. My entire life’s work.”
A recent report from Billboard has since claimed that she paid a pretty penny for them.
Various rumors alleged that the amount Swift had paid was between $600 million and $1 billion; however, other reports from publications like The Guardian have said that these figures are inaccurate.
According to Billboard, Shamrock was initially sold the rights for around $360 million and had reportedly sold it to Swift for close to what they’d originally paid for it.
In her message, Swift also praised Shamrock for how they handled the entire transaction, adding: “I will be forever grateful to everyone at Shamrock Capital for being the first people to ever offer this to me.
“The way they’ve handled every interaction we’ve had has been honest, fair and respectful. This was a business deal to them, but I really felt like they saw it for what it was to me: my memories and my sweat and my handwriting and my decades of dreams.

“I am endlessly thankful. My first tattoo might just be a huge shamrock in the middle of my forehead.”
Shamrock themselves also issued a statement on their website, writing: “We are thrilled with this outcome and are so happy for Taylor.”
Meanwhile, Braun also spoke about the purchase, telling The Independent: “I am happy for her.”
Her message reiterated how ‘important it was for all of this to happen’, as she said she was ‘extremely heartened by the conversations this saga has reignited within my industry among artists and fans’.
“Thank you for being curious about something that used to be thought of as too industry-centric for broad discussion. You’ll never know how much it means to me that you cared. Every single bit of it counted, and ended us up here.” she concluded.

The ‘Taylor Swift’ effect is doing more than increasing friendship bracelet sales.
Wherever Swift goes, money follows. The ‘Bad Blood’ hitmaker wrapped up her record-breaking Eras Tour last year, which boosted most countries’ economies while she was there.
According to Love Money, Swift’s tour was estimated to have increased the Mexican economy by $52 million, while Australia’s is thought to have seen a whopping $558 million boost.
The average Aussie-based Swiftie reportedly spend around $900 on tickets, accommodation, travel, merchandise, and dining, said Angel Zhong, an Associate Professor of Finance at RMIT University.
And it seems Swift’s had a similar effect on the NFL in the wake of her ongoing romance with Kansas City Chiefs footballer, Travis Kelce.
The celebrity pair are believed to have started dating sometime in 2023 and went public with the relationship in September of that year.
Ahead of this weekend’s highly anticipated Super Bowl, which will see the Chiefs go head-to-head with the Philadelphia Eagles, experts have looked into how much money Swift’s frequent appearances at NFL games have injected into the American football league.

According to MarketWatch, between September 2023 to January 2024, Swift created $366,753,290 in total equivalent brand value for the NFL.
And it didn’t stop there. From the day after the 2024 AFC Championship through January 27, Swift is said to have an estimated $634,304,163 in brand value.
These two figures added up come in at over $1 billion.
Speaking on the impressive amount of cash Swift has brought in for the NFL, Eric Smallwood, president of Apex Marketing Group, said: “The ‘Swift Effect’ and the corresponding media exposure continued for the NFL and the Chiefs prior to the start of the 2024 NFL season.
“The media blitz continued as the Chiefs kept winning games and were featured on national broadcasts, leading into the playoffs and now the Super Bowl.”

Smallwood went on: “Taylor was visible at games, and those appearances garnered media attention from sports-media outlets and those entertainment media outlets not normally covering the NFL.”
With Kelce and Swift’s blossoming romance in mind, some people have hedged their bets that the sports star might propose to the singer at tomorrow’s Super Bowl.
He was asked during a press conference if he plans on giving her an engagement ring, to which Kelce replied: “A Super Bowl ring? Next question.”
That doesn’t sound like a no to me…

Taylor Swift has made a massive announcement about her music.
Some years ago, Scooter Braun’s company Ithaca Holdings LLC purchased Big Machine Label Group and all of its recorded music assets, which included Swift‘s first six albums.
Braun, who retired at the age of 42 last year, proceeded to sell the master rights to those albums, meaning that the ‘Bad Blood’ singer did not own her music she released while with Big Machine Label Group. Her contract with them expired in 2018.
Braun proceeded to sell the masters to Swift’s records to the private equity firm Shamrock Capital for a reported $300 million.
But, after years of fighting, Swift now officially owns all of her music.
Announcing the news in a heartfelt letter shared to her website, the history-making singer said: “I almost stopped thinking it could ever happen, after 20 years of having the carrot dangled and then yanked away. But that’s all in the past now. All of the music I’ve ever made … now belongs … to me.”

“To say this is the greatest dream come true is actually being pretty reserved about it,” Swift went on to say of the news.
“To my fans, you know how important this has been to me – so much so that I meticulously re-recorded and released 4 of my albums, calling them Taylor’s Version.
“The passionate support you showed those albums and the success story you turned The Eras Tour into is why I was able to buy back my music.
“I can’t thank you enough for helping to reunite me with this art that I have dedicated my life to, but have never owned until now.”

Taylor’s heartfelt message continued: “All I’ve ever wanted was the opportunity to work hard enough to be able to one day purchase my music outright with no strings attached, no partnership, with full autonomy.
“I will be forever grateful to everyone at Shamrock Capital for being the first people to ever offer this to me. The way they’ve handled every interaction we’ve had has been honest, fair, and respectful.
“This was a business deal to them, but I really felt like they saw it for what it was to me: My memories and sweat and my handwriting and my decades of dreams. I am endlessly thankful. My first tattoo might just be a huge shamrock in the middle of my forehead.”

With Swift’s debacle in mind, she said that it has sparked other artists to ensure that they own their master recordings, with some also having considered re-recording their music.
“I’m extremely heartened by the conversations this saga has reignited within my industry among artists and fans,” said the ‘Shake It Off’ hitmaker.
“Every time a new artist tells me they negotiated to own their master recordings in their record contract because of this fight, I’m reminded of how important it was for all of this to happen.
“Thank you for being curious about something that used to be thought of as too industry-centric for broad discussion. You’ll never know how much it means to me that you cared. Every single bit of it counted, and ended us up here.”
She concluded the lengthly letter describing herself as feeling ‘elated and amazed’.

Taylor Swift has somehow managed to enrage some people online after donating millions for hurricane relief.
Florida has been dealing with the fallout of both Hurricane Helene and most recently Hurricane Milton, both leaving devastation in some communities.
This will obviously mean difficult times ahead, for many and a desperate need for rebuilding and supplies for those in need.
So, you would think a massive donation would be well-received – well, seemingly not if it’s from Taylor Swift.
On October 9, the CEO of Feeding America, Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, issued a statement to thank the popstar for her contribution of $5 million dollars to the charity.

The statement read: “We’re incredibly grateful to Taylor Swift for her generous $5 million donation to Hurricanes Helene and Milton relief efforts.
“This contribution will help communities rebuild and recover, providing essential food, clean water and supplies to people affected by these devastating storms.
“Together, we can make a real impact on supporting families as they navigate the challenges ahead. Thank you Taylor for standing with us in the movement to end hunger and for helping communities in need.”
Swiftie or not, you would expect most people would be happy with the music star helping out.
But some argued that given Swift’s a status as a billionaire, she should have donated significantly more.
Writing on Twitter, one person commented: “Well it’s a start. She is a billionaire. 5 million is like $10 to most of us.”
“This is just nonsense. The only reason she’s doing this is to improve her image after her terrible support of KH. She’s trying to distract everyone from her past mistakes and make herself look better… Lol,” another commented.
“$5 million is a lot to you or I, but to Taylor Swift it’s the equivalent of someone who earns $50k a year donating $100-150. It’s still a lovely gesture & infinitely better than nothing, but not a massive sacrifice,” a third wrote.

However, these comments were few and far between, with Taylor Swift fans stepping in to defend the star.
“If I see 1 person talking about how $5 million is nothing to her then you donate 5 mil,” one defender wrote.
“Say what you want about her but she donates in time of need,” someone else added.
“Swift didn’t have to donate a dime of her hard-earned money,” a third commented.
“”Anyways imagine if all billionaires did stuff like this instead of just a few,” noted another.
