Staggering amount tourists could be fined after shocking footage showed them breaking ‘Van Gogh’ chair

The tourists could be in a lot more trouble than they thought

Two tourists who broke a ‘Van Gogh’ chair could find themselves owing an arm and a leg if authorities catch them.

Two tourists visiting Italy are being chewed out online after a video showed them breaking a chair out on display at Palazzo Maffei Verona.

Despite the signs indicating it was part of the exhibit and the general rule of ‘look don’t touch’, the pair opted to get more than a little close to the piece of art.

A Swarovski crystal-covered chair by Nicola Bolla resembling the one depicted in Van Gogh’s infamous 1888 painting was freestanding in one of the rooms of the museum.

So how did it happen? Well, the couple chose to pose by it and then on it for some photos, firstly the woman appeared to perch on it for a snap before the man actually did sit on it and broke it.

The unidentified duo then quickly rushed out of the room and out of the museum before staff noticed the damage, according to officials.

Their actions were caught on CCTV and the museum took to posting the footage on social media, while scolding them in an attempt to ‘reflect and raise public awareness’ about respecting art.

Carlotta Menegazzo, an art historian at the museum, told the BBC that there was ‘a note warning people not to touch, and of course it is placed on a pedestal’, adding: “So it’s quite clear it’s not a real chair.”

The couple also faced a ton of criticism from viewers online, with many commenters all expressing the same opinion that the couple should ‘pay for the damage’.

While the museum haven’t said how much the couple could be fined, they could potentially face significant penalties if caught, according to an insurance team.

Laura Court-Jones, member of Bionic’s insurance team, told UNILAD that ignoring ‘don’t touch rules’ in museums can have ‘real consequences’.

“These can range from warnings to serious legal and financial penalties, depending on the severity of the act and the value of the object involved,” she said.

“In countries with strict cultural heritage protection laws (such as Italy), damaging museum property can result in substantial fines (sometimes tens of thousands of euros) and, in serious cases, criminal charges, including possible imprisonment.”

According to Court-Jones, under Italian law, they could expect to cough up a whopping $50,000 in addition to being liable for restoration costs.

The chair’s main seat and two legs were destroyed, however, they have since been restored.

The museum’s director, Vanessa Carlon, told the BBC that she wanted the footage to highlight that ‘anyone should enter art places, or museums or churches, wherever art is displayed, in a more respectful way’.

“Art must be respected and loved because it is very fragile.” she said.

UNILAD has previously reached out to Palazzo Maffei Verona for comment and further clarification on the charges or fines the couple may face.

An Italian museum has hit out at a pair of tourists who broke some artwork by sitting on it.

The couple in question were visiting Palazzo Maffei Verona when the incident occurred. CCTV footage shows them walking around the museum when they saw a piece of art called Van Gogh‘s chair — a Swarovski crystal-covered chair by Nicola Bolla resembling the one depicted in Van Gogh’s infamous 1888 painting.

The chair was freestanding in one of the rooms of the museum, sparking the couple to pose by it (and on it) for photos.

Firstly, the woman appears to perch on it for a snap, only for the man to go and properly sit on the artwork. It then broke into pieces.

After their faux pas, the duo rush out of the room.

While I’m sure they hoped that that would be the end of the incident, the museum has since shared CCTV footage on its social media pages. It did, however, blur their faces.

Alongside the video, the museum penned in a statement: “An irresponsible gesture at Palazzo Maffei.

“What you have just seen is not a joke, but an episode that actually happened in the rooms of Palazzo Maffei.

“Superficial and disrespectful behavior has put the integrity of a work of art at risk: the ‘Van Gogh’ chair by the artist Nicola Bolla was damaged by some visitors, who, waiting for the security guards to leave, chose to take an ‘effective’ photo, ignoring every rule of respect towards art and cultural heritage.

“We decided not to limit ourselves to a simple report of the incident. We want to transform this episode into an opportunity to reflect and raise public awareness: art must be admired, experienced, but above all respected. Always.”

People online have since shared their thoughts on the matter, and it’s safe to say that they’re far from impressed.

One person said on Facebook: “This is crazy! I have seen that building and the artistic beauties it contains made generously available by the owner, so that others, everyone can enjoy… What a little brat !!! They should be identified and punished for the damage caused.”

“They don’t deserve anonymity,” insisted another. A third person suggested: “I hope they pay for the damage and if it’s invaluable, they must at least give them a pretty fine.”

Some people have speculated that the couple were American, but this has not been confirmed.

Fortunately the story has a somewhat happy ending, as the artwork has since been restored, New York Post reports.

Ukraine gives update on radiation levels after shocking footage showed Russian drone hitting Chernobyl power plant

It comes as peace negotiations are expected to get underway

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned Russia for its latest attack which saw a drone strike the Chernobyl power plant.

The war between Russia and Ukraine has almost been going on for the last three years as its anniversary, February 24, steps ever closer.

Despite the countless Ukrainian civilian deaths since Russia decided to illegally invade its neighboring country, the path to peace is still not clear.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly insisted he wants to end the war and has reportedly spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin over the phone multiple times with this goal in mind.

Vice President JD Vance is set to meet with President Zelensky in Munich today (February 14) with the hope of peace talks and this latest attack will likely come up in conversation.

Taking to Twitter earlier today, Zelensky said a Russian drone struck the shelter over Chernobyl’s destroyed fourth power unit, which is ‘protecting the world from radiation’.

The impact reportedly caused a fire that has since been extinguished, however, there were fears the attack on the shelter could spark an increase in radioactivity in the area.

Despite claims the attack caused ‘significant’ damage, Zelensky confirmed radiation levels have not increased. Ukraine’s State Emergency Service has also said radiation levels in the area remain within normal limits.

On Twitter, Zelensky shared video footage of the attack, condemning Russia and insisting it shows their unwillingness to engage in peace negotiations.

He said: “Last night, a Russian attack drone with a high-explosive warhead struck the shelter protecting the world from radiation at the destroyed 4th power unit of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

“This shelter was built by Ukraine together with other countries of Europe and the world, together with America – all those committed to real security for humanity.

“The only country in the world that attacks such sites, occupies nuclear power plants, and wages war without any regard for the consequences is today’s Russia. This is a terrorist threat to the entire world.”

On Friday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov denied that Russia was behind the attack and argued it was likely a ‘provocation’.

Speaking to the press, he said: “Most likely, this is yet another provocation.

“This is exactly the kind of thing the Kyiv regime is known for and sometimes does not hesitate to do.”

Zelensky continued to argue on social media that Russia intended to deceive the world about its actions during the war.

In another post, he commented: “Russia continues to expand its army and shows no change in its deranged, anti-human state rhetoric. This means that Putin is definitely not preparing for negotiations – he is preparing to continue deceiving the world.

“That is why there must be unified pressure from all who value life – pressure on the aggressor. Russia must be held accountable for its actions.”

Shocking study reveals surprising amount people should have saved for retirement based on their age

It’s been 84 years…

Poppy Bilderbeck

A study has revealed how many Americans think they’ll be able to achieve the figure they have in mind for their retirement pot and how much they need to have saved at certain ages to achieve it.

It’s hard to think about saving for so much as a pair of shoes or a holiday, let alone saving for your retirement, with the cost of living crisis hitting so hard that one person has even resorted to living in a glamorized dumpster.

However, if you have recently been experiencing your quarter-life crisis and resolved to read up about finances and try to take control, or just see how f**ked we all are and decide to YOLO and buy that avocado anyway and feel a bit of solidarity with everyone else struggling, then this is for you.

How much do you actually need to save to retire ‘comfortably’?

An annual research study from Northwestern Mutual – titled The 2025 Planning & Progress Study – aims to ‘explore US adults’ attitudes and behaviors toward money, financial decision-making, and the broader issues impacting people’s long-term financial security’ revealing how much you should have saved for retirement at certain ages.

The study reports that the ‘magic number’ most Americans hope to have saved in the belief it will allow them to ‘retire comfortably’ as of 2025 is ‘$1.26 million’.

However, this very much depends on when you plan on retire and I guess whether or not you’re planning to retire in style – with some choosing to set sail on cruises for the rest of their days, although apparently that’s now actually cheaper than living on land.

Fidelity’s savings factors are based on the idea you start saving some of your income each year from the age of 25 and do some investing along the way, alongside planning on ‘maintaining [your] preretirement lifestyle in retirement’.

“Based on those assumptions, we estimate that saving 10x (times) your preretirement income by age 67, together with other steps, should help ensure that you have enough income to maintain your current lifestyle in retirement,” it explains.

But how much does this mean you should save by certain ages?

How much you should try to have saved by the ages of 30, 40, 50 and 60?

In order to ‘stay on track,’ with your retirement plan if it aligns similarly to the one above, Fidelity advises certain ‘age-based milestones’.

It states: “Aim to save at least 1x your income by age 30, 3x by 40, 6x by 50, and 8x by 60.”

“Your personal savings goal may be different based on various factors [i.e. when you plan to retire and your plans during retirement],” it further notes. “But these guidelines can provide a starting point to help your build your savings plan, and assess your progress.”

And for those of us who are nowhere near any of those stages and don’t think we ever will be?

Well, thankfully, there’s strength in numbers at least.

Most of us feel behind with retirement savings – woohoo!

A Bankrate survey revealed that 57 percent of Americans working full-time, part-time or who are temporarily unemployed feel behind on their retirement savings.

When asked how much they currently have saved for retirement compared to their current annual income, 23 percent of Gen Z said they had ‘less than 1x [their] income’ in retirement savings compared to 22 percent of Millennials, 14 percent of Gen X and 10 percent of Boomers, the Northwestern Mutual study reports.

And when it comes to reaching the goal they have set in their mind? A solid 48 percent don’t think they’ll actually be able to achieve it.

So just buy yourself that coffee eh?

Second biggest diamond in the world has been discovered and it’s worth a shocking amount

The diamond was discovered in Botswana and is the largest diamond ever found in the nation

Gerrard Kaonga

Gerrard Kaonga

The biggest diamond in over 100 years has been found in Botswana – but we’re sorry to report it’s probably a bit outside your price range.

The world is full of expensive luxuries, but one thing that has remained a symbol of wealth is diamonds.

Not exactly sure why precious jewels have always been so well sought after, but I guess our collective monkey brain went ‘shiny rock good’ and we all concluded ‘yeah, sounds about right’.

So you can only imagine the smiles and wonder when the world’s second largest diamond was discovered recently in Botswana.

The diamond is reportedly a rough 2,492-carat stone and was unearthed at a mine owned by Canadian firm Lucara Diamond.

And just so we are all on the same page, diamonds of this size aren’t found on the regular or every 10 or 20 years. In fact, it is has been over 100 years since a rock this size has been found.

I guess this is still a fistful of diamonds. (Lucara Diamonds)I guess this is still a fistful of diamonds. (Lucara Diamonds)

I guess this is still a fistful of diamonds. (Lucara Diamonds)

It is the largest find since the 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond, ‘found’ in South Africa in 1905.

This stone was subsequently cut into nine separate stones, many of which are in the British Crown Jewels. And understandably, not everyone is happy about this fact.

Lucara has issued a statement following the discovery, but kept quiet about its potential worth.

The Lucara head William Lamb said: “[It is] one of the largest rough diamonds ever unearthed.

“We are ecstatic about the recovery of this extraordinary 2,492 carat diamond.

While the firm didn’t give any details about its worth, UK-based Financial Times newspaper claimed to have spoken to people close to Lucara.

They reported that the stone could be worth upwards of $40m.

So where was it found?

Well, the diamond was found at the Karowe mine, about 300 miles from Botswana’s capital, Gaborone.

But if you thought you might grab your shovel and your mates and try and find your own fortune in the area you would be out of luck, because Lucara has 100 percent ownership of the mine in Karowe.

The mine has also made massive discoveries in the past, in 2019 a 1,758-carat stone was found.

So it might not surprise you that Botswana is one of the world’s biggest producers of diamonds, accounting for about 20 percent of global production.

But unless you just happen to be a cash rich millionaire, chances are you probably won’t be putting in a bid for this particular rock. Maybe the next one.
